Best Golf Courses and Resorts

I am wanting to take my parents on a trip in September or late October. Golf is the center of any vacation for him. Any suggestions on great courses--public, of course. I hear there are some out West in California that are spectacular. Could really use some help. Thanks!
Susan, take a look at the Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale Arizona. October in Arizona should be great weather. There are lots of courses in the phoenix area.

In October I'd recommend:

Kingsmill in Virginia
Kiawah in Charleston, South Carolina
The Cloister on Sea Island, Georgia
World Woods, North of Tampa, FL
La Quinta in Palm Springs, CA
WOW, wide open options here. In September, you should consider Semiahmoo Resort and Country Club in the northwest corner of the Northwest near Blaine, Washington. The late September summer is often beautiful, but the wet season generally kicks in by mid-October. There is a fine lodge surrounded by breathtaking shoreline and a first rate course. The proximity to Vancouver, Canada should definitely prompt a visit there too. Other options would be Whistler, British Columbia and Bend, Oregon.
Definitely Arizona in late October, golf should be superb...not only are the courses spectacular, but the surrounding scenery is terrific and the weather should be just perfect. Western Canada in September would be our choice, Jasper, Banff and Kananaskis.

Everybody has left out two of the greatest golfing areas in the country.

1. Palm Springs, CA.
Too hot in the summer though tee times are easy to get. Great during the rest of the year.

2. San Diego, CA.
Wide choice of courses with great weather and accomodations available.
