There was a hugh jump in crime here in Houston, when the Katrina refugees first got here and some of it filtered down to Galveston. Those guys have since found new quarters in Huntsville ( State Prison ) and I 'spect many have filtered back to NO where their activities are less controlled. It's pretty much back to normal now.

The Princess was replaced by the Voyager of the Seas . . about twice as large.

we've rented a house on pirate's beach (and on the beach side, I woulnd't want the bay side). These beach communities are nowhere near the historic downtown area but it is within 30 min driving from the main seawall area.

I agree with volcanogirl - gaidos was packed, as typical with long wait times but the food wasn't good. We tried their sister place Casey's and got seated right away, food is cheaper and taste so much better too.

Thanks everyone..

we have been trying to come up with a house that has a pool or access to a pool. Especially for the grand parents.

Some of the houses are north of 305. That is a highway right...can you cross it to walk to the beach or not a good idea. Doesn't seem like a good idea, but not sure.

At Pirates Beach, 3005 is a divided highway . . it narrows down to a two lane farther south. It is not easy to cross on foot.

Agree with other posters, skip Gaido's.

Most restaurants directly on the Seawall are touristy. Some of the better restaurants are off the beaten path a bit. My favorite restaurants include Benno's for casual cajun seafood (this IS on the seawall), DiBella's for Italian (bring cash, no credit cards), Clary's for finer atmosphere seafood, Shrimp 'n Stuff for a casual oyster po'boy and Negra Modelo under the palm trees on their deck, Original Mexican Cafe for Mexican, La King's confectionary for an old fashioned float or ice cream. Haven't been to Mosquito Cafe or Saltwater Grill but they seem to be popular.

Galveston is city of hidden charms that take time to unearth. I would also take the free ferry over to Bolivar. Consider a meal at Stingaree overlooking the intercoastal waterway.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Sea Isle beach. Hopefully, someone else is.

The Bolivar ferry idea might be worth considering. It connects Galveston with the mainland on the east end of the island. It's free and takes about 20-30 min one way. We always think its rather routine, but when we've taken family or friends on it who aren't used to such things, they've really liked it. Kids like to feed the sea gulls along the way who swarm the boat, and you're likely to see a few dolphins.

We're planning on staying at the Seascape Condominiums in mid-May. Has anyone stayed at the Seascape before and how was it?

On the Seawall try The Spot for the BEST fish sandwiches and hamburgers. Their onion rings are to die for! It is a very casual place with a view of the beach.
