Best Fried Chicken in Charleston
 

We have 3 nights in Charleston next month. After researching here and looking at menus, we've chosen Husk for one evening, and want to leave another evening open to play by ear. One night, we want to scratch DH's itch for his favorite food, fried chicken! We will be in town on a Tuesday night. Is Glass Onion a must, or do you recommend something else?

Mu SIL had wonderful fried chicken at Macintosh, but it may not always be on menu.

I have to say that some of the best fried chicken I ever had was at Poogan's porch.

There is good fried chicken and then there is GOOD fried chicken. In my opinion the Glass Onion is the place to go for the Best GOOD fried chicken in Charleston.

Be sure to go online to their website and/or call them about a definite reservation. (You reserve the kind of chicken you want as well as your reservation time) It's a very relaxed place and has a casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere. I think you'll love it. It's in the West Ashley part of Charleston, across the river, so you'll need a car.

Upper King Street has new restaurants opening every week (too many to keep track of, actually). That might be a good location for your impromptu 3rd night dining.

DebitNM....DH and I ate at MacIntosh last week and there was not fried chicken on the menu.

However we had some great housemade sausages and pickles :-)

Any comments on MARTHA LOU’S KITCHEN? It doesn't sound upscale which is fine, but is it good? And if you have any comments on other cities in the article I would love to hear them.

yeah I am thinking about trying Martha Lou's while we are there, Sorry about the "shouty" all caps above-I had cut and pasted it from the article and hit submit before I noticed. And as you all know there is no edit function on this board (sigh)....

Marth Lou's has wonderful food and it's so great that it is becoming a foodie destination BUT- it is very rustic: more like a road side food stand (in an industrial neighborhood) with a few tables. Also, it is a breakfast/lunch place- not dinner. I don't think she is open in the evenings. Amazing fried chicken. Bertha's Kitchen also has great fried chicken and is open for dinner and has more indoor seating (but also in an industrial neighborhood- off the interstate).

thanks booksw-I would actually prefer a lunch to a dinner, so that would be a good thing. It is nice to know what to expect-we are excited to try it.

We just ate at Glass Onion and I can't tell you how much we enjoyed it. It was the best meal of our trip so far. Absolutely the best fried chicken I've ever had. Amazing fried chicken and sides. I had sweet potato and collard greens; my husband had grits and collard greens. We shared a delectable banana pudding for dessert. And, the service is so friendly.

Thanks for this recommendation. It was a meal to remember!
