Best for Snowshoes in New England

Wanted to plan a trip in New England for a family to try out new Christmas Snowshoes. Looking for resorts with good trails and other family activities. Need mid price range, not over the top. We are not skiers so this is all new to us. Traveling in Mid January or Feburary. Thank you.

Try the Mountain Top Inn in Chittenden, VT.
Mad River Glen Ski Area (in VT) also has snowshoe trails and I believe they also do guided tours: www.madriverglen.com
The Stowe area has many Inns/motels/resorts and they have a great recreation path that you can snowshoe on. Try www.gostowe.com

I second the vote for Mountain Top. They have lots of cross-country trails that can also be used with snowshoes (I assume -- you might want to check with the hotel), and other fun stuff like a skating rink, sledding, sleighrides, and a private family-sized hot tub. The food is great, and its a quick trip to town.

If you haven't already bought them, rent them first! They aren't as much fun as they look. And if you're going to use them for snow that is already groomed, you can just as easily walk. If you're going to use them for powder, try them out before you invest.

I agree that renting showshoes first is a good idea. I do disagree though on why...the sport is a LOT of fun and you want to make sure you get ones that you like.

I agree, snowshoeing is a great FUN but you need to have a lots of snow and sometimes it is a hard work. You can go snowshoeing anywhere, we never snowshoed on groomed trails.

Check the B&B's in the Mad River Valley. The Mad River Path is a large network of snowshoe trails. Many B&B's provide the snowshoes as an amenity.
