Best fast food joints

With car travel inevitable for most Fodors posters, I thought we'd share some of the better fast food joints. I've always been please with the following Long John Silvers--Sabraton,WV (just outside Morgantown), Cambridge, Ohio, Washington,PA. Have found the Hardees of Beulaville, NC to be well run. An Arby's in the south Richmond,VA suburbs is quite well run. The McDonalds of Roanoke Rapids,NC has a very nice playland for the tots.

Any In'n Out Burger place in the state of California.

xxx Jun 28th, 2001 08:17 AM

The chili relleno burrito at Green Burrito is high on my list for good fast food.

al Jun 28th, 2001 08:20 AM

WAFFLE HOUSE!

Jack Jun 28th, 2001 08:23 AM

Is Waffle House really a fast food joint? I thought fast food is more like a place that you can drive through and pick up food to go. Though I have to say that I did enjoy the Waffle House experience one time in New Mexico. Though I can't say I'd ever go to one if it was in my hometown.

A McDonald's near Raleigh, NC, where the server offered to pay for the drink rather than us split a $20 note. We declined but thanked him.

Jay Jun 28th, 2001 09:45 AM

After a day of surfing, there's nothing better than a fish taco from Rubio's Taco Shop. I might sound nasty to most, but those of us in San Diego know what I'm talking about.

Kaycee Jun 28th, 2001 10:38 AM

When visiting Disney World (Orlando, FL) we were much impressed with McDonald's near All-Star Resorts. We went there four different times. Very polite employees, clean, large bathrooms, Disney movies on a big screen for kids to watch, and hot food.

Christie Jun 28th, 2001 10:45 AM

For good Tex-Mex on the run, try Taco Cabana!<BR>Or if you feel like cajun food, Popeye's Chicken &amp; Biscuits is good, too.

RUCrazy Jun 28th, 2001 10:51 AM

Try reading Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, you will never eat at any of these places again... *Great* book.

villacruz Jun 28th, 2001 02:17 PM

I agree with Kam, those In and Out burgers are to die for!! Get a double double animal style.

Karen Jun 28th, 2001 02:28 PM

In and Out Burgers! Woohoo! That with an order of their fresh cut fries and a chocolate shake....running out my door now to get some!

mist Jun 28th, 2001 02:52 PM

NO BODY BUT NO BODY HAS BETTER FAST FOOD THAN CHICK-FIL-A....THOSE WAFFLE FRIES, CHICK-FIL-A SANDWICH, LEMONADE...ETC..ETC.....YUM!!!!

Everett Jun 28th, 2001 04:06 PM

My friends in Cardiology are thrilled, I'm sure, at all these responses!!

LadyJane Jun 28th, 2001 05:12 PM

In Manhattan (so you have to go on foot, not in your car, I'm afraid): Gray's Papaya and Papaya King--one's at 86th &amp; 3rd Ave, one's at 8th St &amp; 6th Ave. GOOD hot dogs and papaya drink, a weird New York special.

Another vote for "In N Out" in Calif. We love them and they are all much cleaner than the average fast food place. Another yummy place (but kind of a dive) is JB Burgers in La Puente, Ca. The food is very inexpensive and very good.

I used to be a big In-'n-Out Burger fan, especially when you could make their bumper stickers say something really rude, but the last couple of times I've been in SoCal I haven't been all that impressed. Better than McDs or BK, sure, even Carls Jr., but not all that great, just a little fresher, maybe. <BR><BR>Here in slug city we have a couple of burger chains which would clean the clocks of In 'n Out, IMO - Kidd Valley, call the doctor, stat - and Dick's, an homage to the 50s - tiny menu, limited choice, shakes made with real ice cream, no seating, pull in with your T-Bird, turn on the radio, get grease on you face and deep into your veins. Ain't America great?

Melissa Jun 29th, 2001 12:05 AM

Anybody ever try a W&amp;M Burger in Honolulu? It's good stuff, but it's hard to find and there's little parking. Still, it's worth the hunt!

Shannon Jun 29th, 2001 12:51 AM

Sonic Drive-Ins, Chick-Fil-A and Peter Piper Pizza, hands down!!!!

Englishgirl Jun 29th, 2001 04:49 AM

Dick's Drive-in, definitely!

DannyFoo Jun 29th, 2001 07:04 AM

White Castle. Hands down. Mmmmmmmm

Mia Jun 29th, 2001 07:08 AM

Steak &amp; Shake...Michigan

Jamie Jun 29th, 2001 07:48 AM

I went to a White Castle for the first time recently. I've never had such a revolting experience. Is there actually any beef used in those hamburgers?

Ann Jun 29th, 2001 07:48 AM

McDonald's in Breezewood, PA, right off the turnpike.

Tony Hughes Jun 29th, 2001 08:21 AM

I thought whitecastle was bad until I ventured into a Krystal in Gadsden, Alabama. Avoid.

CC Jun 29th, 2001 08:36 AM

Another vote for the castle from me (White Castle). Ate 15 last night. Can still taste 'em. LOL

Hanna Jun 29th, 2001 08:45 AM

The Arby's in Pine Grove, PA, just off of Route 81 is always excellent. Hot food, friendly service, clean bathrooms -- just what the hungry traveller orderded!

Jack Jul 6th, 2001 07:01 AM

Best cheeseburgers in the world: Swenson's Drive-In Restaurants. There are five locations in the Akron, OH area. FANTASTIC!!!

L Jul 6th, 2001 07:23 AM

It's the late 50's and 60's, and it's Daytona Beach, and we're at the 'Steak 'n Shake' on Atlantic Blvd. Ciao

Here's a fun web site: <BR> <BR>www.roadfood.com <BR> <BR>"A site devoted exclusively to finding the most memorable eateries along the highways and backroads of America" <BR> <BR>

Tony Jul 6th, 2001 06:36 PM

As an airline employee I fly to California on a Saturday morning, grab In and Out Burger for lunch, and then go home. <BR> <BR>It is that good...

xxx Jul 6th, 2001 09:49 PM

Tommy's Burgers in Southern California have the best chili burgers and chili fries.

Jen Ratta Jul 7th, 2001 07:07 AM

We love Del Taco and Fat Burger in Las Vegas. I'm not sure of their other locations. Also enjoy previous poster's recommendations about Gray's Papaya and Papaya King in NYC. Also, Checkers for burgers, fries and shakes - various locations across North and South East. Enjoy!

Diane Jul 7th, 2001 10:08 AM

Winstead's in the Kansas City area---beats steak and shake any day. <BR> <BR>the waffle house in cocoa beach florida is filthy.

xxx Jul 7th, 2001 06:58 PM

Del Taco is a good Southern California choice for fast food. One of the few chains that I know that makes the beans from scratch - as opposed to Taco Bell's bean powder and water paste.

Jim Rosenberg Jul 7th, 2001 07:35 PM

In Wisconsin, look for Culver's for great burgers and frozen custard. :o)

buttercup Jul 8th, 2001 06:19 AM

Waffle House may not be fast food, but it is definately road food. Where else can you pull off the interstate at 11 o'clock at night and order breakfast?

eater Jul 8th, 2001 06:56 PM

In-n-Out <BR>In-n-Out <BR>That's what a hamburger's allll about. <BR> <BR>Damn, I wish they would move out here.

Frank Jul 8th, 2001 08:15 PM

Fast food places that have decent food but service and cleanliness vary: <BR>Wendy's (a couple in areas surrounding D.C. and Baltimore have good fried chicken) <BR>Arby's <BR>Chick-fil-a (never any problems with anything there except sometimes too crowded and there aren't that many that are outside of malls unfortunately...be sure to try their chicken biscuit if you want breakfast on the road-yummy) <BR>Carl's Jr. (are there any outside of California? APpear to be affiliated with the inferior Hardee's that are everywhere :P) <BR>Pollard's in Norfolk and Virginia Beach (best fried chicken in the world and always fresh) <BR>Burgers (the ultimate road trip food, but be careful not to overdo it because being too full will make you sleepy and sluggish): <BR>What-a-burger in Newport News, Virginia <BR>Biggie's in San Clemente, California (best burger I've ever had outside of a typical restaurant and there's only one or two of those that I liked even more, and some of the only affordable dining in California, better than Fatburger)
