Best Fare DFW to SAV?

My daughter wants to go see a friend in school in Savannah in March. Looks like SAV is not the cheapest place to fly into, especially from DFW. The cheapest rountrip we've found is over $400.

I thought maybe she could find a decent fare to Atlanta and catch an inexpensive carrier to SAV, but I'm not familiar with the possibilities out of Atlanta.

Any suggestions?

What dates, and how flexible are you?

March 16 evening, return March 20 anytime.

You don't have a Saturday night stay over, and fares won't be that cheap.

Right now, DL is about $368 for your specific dates, via ATL. I don't think you'll see it much cheaper for this particular citypair.

Thanks for looking, rkkwan! We will work it out.

I don't think you'll find it much cheaper than that. HHH is another option, but probably not any less expensive. She could fly into Jacksonville, but then she'd need to rent a car and have about a two hour drive. Flying to Atlanta and driving to Savannah is also option, but that would also require a rental car, and it's about a 4 hour drive to Savannah. That's as bad as driving to Houston. From there she could get a direct flight on CO, but it won't save her any money. From DFW I think getting into SAV is going to require multliple carriers, so I don't think you'll find any bargains.

If her friend has a car, I would suggest looking to HHH and JAX in addtion to SAV. The Kayak site is good. Make sure to check the box to also include nearby airports.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought JAX would be a great option, but it seems her dates are the real problem here because of spring break. Kayak is a great site, by the way!

We used to live in Savannah and flew back and forth to Dallas as one of our kids was still in school there. The least expensive way to go was through JAX (AA) and it is an easy, easy, 2 hr drive from JAX airport (north of downtown with an access road from the airport directly to the interstate) to downtown Savannah. Alternatively, we (or he) would go through Atlanta, staying on the same carrier, but it cost considerably more. Then, too, there is the matter of the Atlanta airport, which I avoid like the plague.

My sister bought tickets for May, leaving late Friday and returning on tuesday...non-stop for under $200 with taxes!! One day it was $400 and the next day $200.

If you go to Orbitz and adjust your days of departure and return, you can get the fare to as low as $219. Surprisingly leaving Monday and returning Thursday generates the $219. Orbitz has a search lowest fare option, and search departures plus or minus one day to consider alternatives.

It's definitely all about the dates. She just couldn't be flexible enough to get the low fares. Even if she had been, some of the layovers in Atlanta were ridiculous -- like nine hours or more. Geesh!

She ended up leaving on Saturday and returning on Wednesday on AirTran, but the fare was almost $500.

Thanks for all your replies. I will keep all this in mind for other trips!

Savannah has a huge drunken 3/17 fest every year - this may account for some of price (and hopefully not your dtrs interest in these dates). Parade this year is Friday 3/14 to accomodate Holy Week (can't be drunken during that week, I guess), but events will be going on all weekend. They dye the fountains green, and the entire Riverfront area is packed with drunks.

If she is visiting a college friend, several of the Savannah area schools (including SCAD where my son is a senior) actually try to plan Spring Break so that students are not in school session during this time.

There are not usually inexpensive fares to Savannah and planning to fly to Charlotte or Atlanta and then catching a low fare for the rest of the trip has never worked for us. Jacksonville and Charleston are each about 2 hours drive away, but it does not sound like renting a car is likely to be an option.

(Hope I have not scared you too much with accounts of festivities that weekend)

Oh gosh...I didn't pick up on the dates!! Ick...no, double ick.

Hehe -- of course the St. Patrick's Day festivities are EXACTLY why she wanted to be there on the right day! Heck, can't say that I blame her!

I am in Savannah right now visiting son (age 21) and he loves the St. Pats Day thing so much he and his friends are delaying their Key West trip to make sure they are here for 3/17.
