Best Dim Sum Chinatown San Francisco: Great Eastern or Gold Mountain???

Planning to have dim sum this weekend and trying to narrow it down between these two recommended places.

Any thoughts as to which one is better...Great Eastern or Gold Mountain?

I know Great Eastern allows you to order off a menu rather than off a cart, that's kind of appealing since the carts never seem to come around fast enough. I've had lunch at Gold Mountain, I wasn't wowed but maybe their dim sum is better?

Both of these are a stone's throw from our hotel on broadway and stockton and I'd prefer not to take muni, some place in walking distance.

Any input???

ET took me to the best Dim Sum I've ever had, but it wasn't in Chinatown and unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the place, but hopefully she'll see this and tell us!

I have never had decent dim sum in chinatown.

The best I have had in SF is Yank Sing, a little pricy but very good.

Yikes, that's not good! I like a lot of the dim sum bakeries in town where you can order it to go and they throw it all in plastic bag. However, my sister-in-law and my brother are going to be with us and I wanted to go to a sit down place. I'm not too picky about the dim sum because no matter what they serve me in Chinatown it's still going to be better than what I can get here in Arizona! I actually like You's Bakery for cheap takeout dim sum. It's right below our hotel and it's so convenient.

Chinatown is a delight. I love the chaos.

We actually always go to Pearl City, which is something like two doors down from Great Eastern. Going by reputation, though, I suspect that Gold Mountain is a better bet then Great Eastern if purely because of volume.

As dim sum novices, we ate at Gold Mountain and thought it was very good.

I think we'll try Gold Mountain, it's right across from the hotel and it's supposed to rain ALL week that we are there :-(

We ended up going to Great Eastern, wow, what a fantastic place. First, I like that you dont have to wrangle over the carts, you order straight off a color photograph menu on an order sheet similar to a sushi list. The dim sum was very high quality and a very good price. We at 11 different dishes for $33. The stuffed bean curd skins were the best we've ever had. Wait staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I cant wait to go back there.
