Chocolate creme brulee. A restaurant called Hurricaine, at Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine.

Bread pudding at a little cafe -- I think it was called Sisters Cafe or something like that... in some little town just outside the Oregon Trail Visitors Center, somewhere in Oregon!

When I was working a project in NYC, we made it a mission to find the best creme brulee in Manhattan.

We failed...too many good ones.

Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate, served in the Dessert room of award-winning Bern's Steak House in Tampa, FL. Absolutely the best dessert in the world! A layer of chocolate cheesecake, chocolate pate, and chocolate mousse, and topped with real whipped cream and chocolate shavings!

Peanut butter pie from a cafe called Mrs. George's outside Rocky Mount NC. Three inches of sticky PB topped w/4 inches merangue. Absolute heaven. Anyone know if this place still exists? I was last there about 25 years ago but I can still remember it.

Profiteroles with chocolate sauce poured from a silver pot, late at night at an outdoors cafe in Paris.

Snacking on crepes slathered in melted chocolate and rolled, drenched with Grand Marnier, while strolling the streets in the evening in St.Tropez in 1991. Perhaps the ambiance had to do with my perception of how good these were. I have never been able to duplicate them since.

Also, more recently, the Grand Marnier souffle and Kahlua souffle at Sir Winstons on the Queen Mary at sunset.

Oh well, R...
Eight weeks ago, I was a dedicated gym rat working off calories for my next vacation, lol. So, even if I knew about this site back then, I would have skipped the post possibly. Besides, maybe I jogged some new memories or recent desserts.:)

My absolute favorite is Tiramisu. Surprisingly the best one I had was at Fino, the restaurant is just OK, but the dessert is heavenly! It's in Andrews hotel on Post St, San Francisco.

Cookie, I love Bern's! Those little dessert booths are beyond charming!
I have rarely met a dessert I didn't like, but a recent favorite was the lavender creme brulee at La Casa Sena in Santa Fe. .(gc, you'll have to expand your research...)A perennial favorite are the milkshakes at Andy's Igloo in Winter Haven, FL--they're at least half ice cream, just killer.

Patty Jul 22nd, 2003 12:32 PM

I'm pretty fond of the kataifi served at Le Petit Greek in Larchmont Village (Los Angeles). I also can't pass up a good creme brulee.

Sticky Toffee Pudding at Brown's Restaurant in London--and I'm a chocoholic.

LN Jul 22nd, 2003 01:06 PM

Went to dinner at a friend's house and for dessert we had this marvelous chocolate shell filled with a chocolate raspberry mixture with raspberry puree drizzled on top. I still haven't stopped dreaming about that!

Tortilla Alaska (more commonly known as Baked Alaska) at a resort hotel in the sleepy Mediteranean town of Mazaron, Spain. They also made a phenomenal Crepes Suzette. Have no idea if this hotel even exists anymore.....just came to me, the name of the place was Hotel Dos Playas. Well over twenty years ago, on a summer that was spent in Spain.

Toll House Cookie Pie at the Warwick Hotel dining room (somewhere near Hershey, PA). Make sure you get the scoop of ice cream with this thing.

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 22nd, 2003 02:37 PM

At Wish, the outstanding restaurant in The Hotel in South Beach, I had two incredible desserts-- a "dulce de leche de satin" (dulce de leche with caramelized banana and crushed Oreo crust) the first night, and a "melting chocolate 'cake'" (similar to a molten chocolate babycake, served with coconut sorbet). Presentation may have been a bit precious (and it was-- we even took a picture), but the desserts were phenomenally wonderful.

rum cake at the magic castle in l.a. it'll stop you in your tracks.
on the simple side, pies (apple, blueberry, peach, banana cream, pumpkin, etc...)from briemere farms in riverhead new york. 1 hour lines? no problem. not to be missed!!

Apple Pie at Silva's Restaurant in Weed, CA

BTilke Jul 23rd, 2003 07:47 AM

France is famous for its pastries, but the best pastries I have ever had by far come from a little bakery in central Germany. Earlier this year, we spent some time with German relatives and to celebrate a birthday, they served about two dozen slices of different pastries from the bakery. Each one was more scrumptious than the next, but I was over the moon for the cappuccino buttercream layer cake and a raspberry sponge and whipped cream cake.
My favorite chocolate dessert is chocolat moelleux, which is a semisweet chocolate cake with a dark chocolate mousse in the middle. Served warm, usually with a vanilla/fruit coulis.

jette Jul 23rd, 2003 08:10 AM

Andy, thanks for the update. I think of that place every now and again and I would have guessed it was a thing of the past. Hope she passed on that recipe! I miss the PB pie and the NC style barbeque back here in the midwest.

suzanne Jul 23rd, 2003 08:55 AM

Passion fruit souffle at Vong (one of Jean George's restaurants in NYC).

It's served hot, with a blop of passion fruit ice cream in the middle. Yummmm!

LN Jul 23rd, 2003 09:17 AM

Just reading this makes my mouth start watering!! I think I'll try some of Scarlett's dessert first and then BTilke's. But then I always love chocolate especially with raspberries... and gee, it's only 1:30pm how much longer til dinner.

Key Lime pie from the little pie company in NYC.

Ricotta fritters dusted with cinnamon and brown sugar and served with peach ice cream and fresh sliced peaches. It was heaven.

Ate this last night at Craft in NYC. FANTASTIC restaurant.
