jewelhawg: Sorry I didn't get this sooner to you. Here are the falls we have been to which are all accessed by Hwy 64:
Upper Cullasaja Falls, Lower Cullasaja Falls, Dry Falls and Whitewater Falls. Note: You want to go to Whitewater Falls on a clear day, otherwise, if it is very foggy, you will not be able to see the falls. Supposedly the highest falls in the eastern U.S. from what I have read. You may want to contact the Franklin, NC Chamber of Commerce and request their vacation guide, which has a map inside of it with the route you would take in the proper order to see those falls, as well as others in the area. If you are up to doing some hiking, there are more to see. We also went to a falls in the GSM Nat'l Park, and we were not impressed, I'm trying to think of the name of it. It is a mile hike to and from that particular falls. You may want to pick up some walking sticks which will make your walking a little easier. Everyone in our family has their own walking stick, they definitely do come in handy! I have also heard about Deep Creek Falls inside the park but accessed through Bryson City. There are also several falls in GA. Let me know if you would like a list of those, as a friend of mine who lives near Helen (also a great place to go, your relatives would like it there, and there are falls there too) who sent me an article with activities (falls, parks, etc.) in the N. GA mountains.
Hope this info helps. In case you didn't see the map that was on the link with the waterfall link I supplied earlier, here it is:
http://www.franklin-chamber.com/fallsmap.html
Here is another link of additional waterfalls that you may want to look at:

Hope this helps you in your plans. Let me know if you would like info on N. GA mountains.

Another resort just off the Parkway, SW of Charlottesville is Wintergreen www.wintergreenresort.com. Great golf on top of Mountain and in valley, Lots of condos/homes to rent and good restaurants. I recommend driving midweek, as you can crawl on weekends. Also, be aware that it can get rainy and very foggy in the fall, thus making driving on ridges very "interesting" - take good maps in case you want to take the valley vs. the ridge.

Another vote for the Peaks of Otter Lodge off milepost 86. You can read about it at the Hotels tab on this website which is another accommodations resource. Click on the Blue Ridge Parkway link under National Parks.
