There's lots of good places. My favorite if you're willing to drive a half hour or so is in Eastham

http://www.arnoldsrestaurant.com

Haven't been for awhile but Cream and Cone down your end is pretty good, too.

Across from S. Yarmouth on the north side of the Cape in Dennis is Captain Frosty's on Route 6A.

Liam's at Nauset Beach in East Orleans, worth the drive.

No shack, but Cooke's in Hyannis has delicious fried seafood and fabulous onion rings, very light and never greasy.

I like Kate's on 6A. It's definitely a shack.

If you're just looking for fried seafood try one of the Kreme 'n Kones on route 28.

Friendly Fisherman on Rte. 6 in Eastham-- has maybe the best lobster roll on the Cape. Great ice cream a couple doors down (Nauset ice cream).

We've spent the last week of the summer on the Cape for the past 5 years (this year will be 6-hurrah!), and make it a point to try different fried clam strips and bellies each year. As with anything, of course, everyone has a favorite. We like Arnold's, but do not love it. We love Mac's (in Wellfleet, right on the pier), and found Baxter's Boat House in Hyannis to be non-plussing, although sitting waterside was nice. Kreme and Kone gets a big thumbs up, too, but our favorite is JT's in Brewster.

If you need a diversion from clam shacks, Red Barn Pizza is the place. But really, it's hard to go wrong just being on the Cape.

Another vote for Cookes in Hyannis. Great food! Also, track down Timmy's Roast Beef on 28 in West Yarmouth. Lunch only; when the beef runs out, you're out of luck. Eat at an outside table or in your car. And I confess a certain fondness for the Dog House in Dennisport....

I also like Cooke's of Hyannis. I had a bad experience at Arnold's a few years ago and won't try them again.

also recommend Moby Dick's on Rt 6 in Wellfleet. Also, can't think of the name, but on Rt 6 in Eastham, across from entrance to the National Seashore Visitor Center, there is a clam shack/restaurant that is very good, too. It's name is Lobster something, & it's yellow. You can't miss it.

Sesuit Harbor Cafe. Greatest lobster rolls. Bring a roll of papertowels and byob with you. The outside seating is pretty rough, but overlooks the water. It's in Northside Marina in Dennis on Sesuit Harbor Road.

Here's a report on Cape Cod eateries I did last year:

http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...-cod-visit.cfm

An excerpt on clam shacks:

"I found the clam shack places I tried to be good but pretty interchangeable, all at about comparable level: Captain Frosty's (Dennis), Mojo's (Provincetown), Kream 'N Kone (Dennis), Cobie's (Brewster), Cap'n Cass (Orleans), Baxter's (Hyannis), and Sir Cricket's (Orleans). Baxter's struck me as the most expensive, likely owing to its water view and close proximity to the ferries."

Cookes in Orleans (just off the route 6 traffic circle) is better than Hyannis - no particular reason.... smaller maybe.... just always seems beetr - maybe it's me because I dislke Hyannis!
