Best City map of San Francisco
 

Hi,
I am looking for the best sources of detailed city maps of San Francisco. I realize the city is large and maps maybe be broken down by neighborhoods.
Moving my daughter out there in Aug. to attend USF. A little anxious about finding my way around ( she will be fine I am sure!) and doing what we need to do in a limited time. I am thinking we will be out there for two days before she has to move in and will have rented a car.

If you will be using public transportation, the best map is the MUNI map - sold on-line, at the cable car stops, don't know where else - different bus routes in different colors.

If you don't need bus lines indicated, then yes, agree with Stu - AAA map is the best (and free if you know the right people ;) )

Here's another huge recommendation for the MUNI map. You can enlarge and print sections. Terrific for folding up and tucking in a pocket.

I always use the streetwise maps in larger cities. They are laminated & will have all manners of subway stops, etc. as well as points of interest. You can get them on Amazon.com.

AAA map for just the city is great. Also, muni map that you can only get (unless it has changed since last fall)at the airport and a few other places in the city (like the cable car turnaround and visitor center in Union Square) for $3. We were unable to get it online, but it is indispensable for using city transportation (and very hard to figure out the routes etc. before you go).

You can go in almost any large bookstore (Barnes and Noble for example) and they have an assortment of those streetwise maps. I couldn't have gotten around Manhattan the first time I went there as easily without it, but I actually didn't use it in San Francisco.

You can also satellite google your way around an area. I took a "tour" of Chinatown (and a couple of other places) before we went.

I liked the AAA map very much, but it falls apart so quickly. My back-up is the streetwise map and I buy them in Barnes and Noble.

If you're looking for an online map to navigate around the city you can use Microsoft Live Search Maps. Plus, you'll be able to click on popular businesses in SF, read reviews, and see where they're at.

You might consider renting a car with a GPS. I personally have zero sense of direction, and I actually took my own GPS with me when I was recently in SF -- it worked perfectly, and I felt completely at ease all over town.
