Best burger in America?
Evidently, the verdict is in and the answer is Atlanta!
http://www.ajc.com/living/content/li...0lvburger.html I've not eaten at these 3 Atlanta burger destinations - but will soon! |
very cool! I need to try them!
|
Haven't yet eaten at ALL the burger places in America yet so can't make a decision at this time.
|
I think the article should specify that the burger he ate in Atlanta was the best of all the places he actually ate rather than in the entire country.
|
Mc Donald's, naturally.
|
Well, although the article mentions that this one beat out Boulud's $32 burger, I'd still vote for it as being unbelievably good, although it's apparently gone up a few dollars since I tried it.
I'd vote for foie gras in a burger anyday over the bacon cheeseburger and seasoned salt one the author raves for -- even without tasting it. |
I don't like burgers much, but the BEST one ever is at Boon Fly Cafe in the Carneros region of Napa (on Hwy 12). Great Kobe burger!!
|
The In-n-Out burger may not be the best in that reporter's eyes, but when you can have a full meal for less than <b>$6</b> all in, I'll take it.
And, best of all, I don't have to go to Atlanta to sample it. I've got three In-n-Outs within four miles of my house!! |
rjw, that's exactly what I was thinking when I saw this thread!!! Whenever I'm in SoCal, a stop at In-n-Out is MANDATORY!
. . . and I'm not even a big red meat fan! I just wish they'd open some here in the DC area . . . :( |
We had lunch today at Fatburger, new to us here in Florida, but I've seen a zillion of them in the West. What a horrible hamburger. It was grilled until way overcooked and dry and seemed rather crunchy. At first I just thought it was the sort of burned crust on the burger, but then I started pulling tiny pieces of ground bone and/or gristle out of my mouth. I won't be back. At $9 for a 1/3 pound (seemed smaller) burger, fries, and soft drink -- it's no deal either, especially with an extra dollar if you want a slice of American cheese -- what's the extra profit margin in that extra -- about 1000 percent?
|
Patrick, that's terrible! Especially because Fatburger does put out a nice, juicy product out here in CA. My diet can't handle more than one a month, but sometimes you gotta risk the cholesterol spike.
Legend has it Julia Child traveled with the latest list of In-'n'-Outs whenever she was in California (being a native, she knew of their myriad charms...). If it was good enough for her, it's good enough for me. Bon appétit!! |
Best burger I ever had was at McGuire's Irish Pub in Pensacola, Florida in 1990. It was an 8oz prime beef burger and included a bottle of Dom Perignon for $100.00. ((b))
|
Yum, I can down any burger with a side of DP :-) Maybe I'd eat more burgers if I ordered a split of champagne with them! :-)
|
I have it on good authority that the best burgers are at Morvant's in Youngsville, LA. We will be in that area in June - I will let you all know the verdict when I return.
The best burgers used to be at Hal's Grubsteak in Yuba City, CA, but sadly they closed up shop a few years ago. My family is still in mourning. |
There was a classic thread on this board in mid-2005 on "the 20 best hamburgers you must eat before you die." Search for "best hamburger" and it comes up around post #7. I can't figure out how to post a link that actually takes you straight to the post. Really good suggestions there too. That thread also started w/the posting of an article on the subject.

This should take you there -

According to WSJ........
Top Ten.......... The Best Burger.......According To WSJ......... Red Mill Burgers, Seattle, In N Out Burgers, LA, Dirty's, Austin, TX, Nick's Tavern, Chicago, Miller's Bar, Detroit, Ann's Snack Bar, Atlanta, Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage, Cambridge, MA, DB Bistro Moderne, NYC and Primanti Brothers Restaurant, Pittsburg. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB11734... |
I will avoid FatBurger Patrick when I'm in Vegas, which is where I was going to have one last time I was there.
FYI, in my area of San Jose/ South Bay area, I like Clarkes Charburger and Kirk's. |
Haven't read the article yet but see that it says Atlanta. No way does this beat a DB - no way! Give me my DB and don't ban foie gras!
|
|
On a related note, Emory University does world renown research cardiology research.
|
Hoo-whee, Budman! That place just exudes Klass with a "K", don't it?! ;)
But enquiring minds want to know: Are the burgers any good? |
trippinkpj: I don't know that you have to avoid Fatburger in Vegas. My experience has been that the quality of the Fatburger output depends on the kitchen staff. I had an awesome Fatburger the other day from the Third Street Promenade branch, here by my office in downtown Santa Monica. I could see there being variation in the product depending on the venue....
|
Of the three, I've only tried the DB and the In and Out. A friend of mine who is also a graduate of the CIA, Hyde Park, said she's tried all three and DB is best. She went on to say that those three should not even be compared in the same article.
|
TTess, I don't doubt that. But a serious foodie would of course swoon over a burger whose topping is a slice of foie gras...! Reminds me of that headline in <b>The Onion</b>: "Report: Meat Now America's Number 2 Condiment":
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/51139 But seriously, comparing a $32 haute-cuisine postmodern pan-Euro meditation on an American culinary institution to a $2.49 "grab it on the way to the Costa Mesa IKEA" lunch item is a bit ridiculous. And personally, I'll take the one that's available when it's 2 AM and still only costs $2.49. |
Thanks rjw. Food for thought on the Fatburger subject.
|
rjw:
For what it's worth, the last time I went to the Fatburger in PSP, it was OK, but certainly not up to In-n-Out! Which brings up another point -- why only one In-n-Out in the entire Coachella Valley?!?!? |
Shake Shack in NYC. A burger always tastes better when you are eating it in a park in NYC.
|
Hey, what else except White Castle am I allowed to say!
