Depends on your definition of "best" ;)
There are no particularly famous places near Times Square I can think of. The Red Flame Coffee shop on 44 st b/w 5th -6th ave. is dependable and decent food and friendly, but nothing out of the ordinary. Michaels on 55 st b/w 5th-6th is a power breakfast place (upscale restaurant) where you'll see lots of media people. Norma's in the Parker Meridien Hotel (58th st) is "famous" for good breakfasts and large portions (but pricey).

There are a lot of good places in Soho. Balthazar is a very trendy Brasserie with it's own bakery. Great place for breakfast. The Cupping Room is also good. The meatpacking district (trendy area on the edge of the village) is also fun for breakfast. Try Florent.

May I suggest you invest in a Zagat Guide if you're in NY for a week. It's a great way to be able to check for your own restaurants. Lots of good info. It will save you money (they list prix fixe lunches and dinners) and lots of time. Congratulations on upcoming nuptials! :)

I forgot, the Carnegie Deli on 55 st & 7th ave. is famous and would be good for breakfast although they're more known for their deli meats (pastrami etc.)

An absolutely great place for a casual breakfast is a place in the West Village called "The Pink Teacup". I can't remember the exact address, but you can google it or go to menupages.com. One Easter morning my friend and I had fried chicken, salmon croquettes, biscuits and eggs, etc,.at this wonderful little soul food place. Prices are reasonable and the food is delicious. I'm sorry that it's not near Times Square and I don't know how close it is to Soho, as I am just a tourist myself, but I couldn't resist plugging the Pink Teacup for breakfast.

Pink Teacup is on Grove St. b/w Bedford and Bleecker

Avoid the Roxy in Times Square at all costs. I called the waitress over and asked if I could have a new water glass without the red lipstick. She snottily said, "that isn't lipstick, it's just a mark in the glass." I said, "then what is this stuff I could taste from my glass?" as I wiped the lipstick off with my finger and showed it to her. She walked away and refused to wait on us. They had to get another waitress for us. The food matched the service. (By the way it wasn't the finger you're thinking -- I was too slow that morning to have thought have that!)

There's a little trattoria on 8th, between 45 and 46th called Danielle's? Very nice breakfasts.

I also like the Mayrose, near Union Square. It's got a great Manhattan vibe, combining diner with slightly-upscale. Lots of people reading the newspaper, relaxing, being New Yorkers.

Cupping Room Cafe is a great spot for breakfast in Soho. Their address is 359 West Broadway between Broome & Grand.

linchen: Thanks for posting this question and best wishes on your upcoming marriage.

doxungirl and mclaurie: I had a quick look at the website of The Pink Tea Cup and it is not that far from where our son lives so I think we'll give it a try on our next visit.

mclaurie: I am always amazed at how much you know about New York.

Of course Mclaurie nails some great places - Balthazar has a wonderful breakfast, as does their other restaurant Pastis, on 9th Avenue in the meatpacking district.

I love the Pink Tea Cup ( a once a year heart attack on a plate splurge)

Weekend Brunch at Zoe in soho is very good, as are any of the Pain Quotidiens (there are many in Manhattan now. ) I also like Elepahnt and Castle - a very sweet little place on Greenwich Avenue and 7th Avenue in the West Village. The breakfast at Tartine in the West Village is fantastic - the best almond croissants in the city, IMHO.

Don't overlook Cafe Angelique. It recently opened, and is located on the corner of Grove and Bleecker Streets, in Greenwich Village.

mp & JohnWm - I have made notes of the places you mentioned - it is going to be difficult to choose.

What wonderful people post on this site.

I love the Cupping Room for Sunday Brunch!

Near Times Square, Norma's in Le Parker Meridian between 56th & 57th Streets between Sixth and Seventh Avenues and Pick-a-Bagel on the southwest corner of 57th and Seventh Avenue. Pick-A-Bagel is excellent and cheap.

If you find an Ess-A-Bagel, eat there. My opinion, the best bagels in Manhattan.

Not really in Soho, I guess, but close by is Great Jones Cafe, on Great Jones Street off of Bowery. It has kind of a funky, hole-in-the-wall feel and delicious breakfasts with southern and Mexican influences. If you're looking for something a bit more upscale in atmosphere, I agree with the recommendations for Cupping Room and Zoe's. Finally, if you like crepes (though they have other things like salads and sandwiches as well), I highly recommend Palacinka, on Grand Street east of Sixth Avenue. It has a charming, slightly scruffy, euro ambience and the crepes are very excellent (so excellent that I have never explored the rest of their menu and so cannot speak to it).
