Best BBQ Joints between Washington DC - Orlando

Hi

We're travelling from Washington DC to Orlando, so passing through NC, SC, Georgia and Orlando. Can you recommend some excellent BBQ restaurants, that cannot be missed along the way? thanks

sf7307 Jun 23rd, 2011 07:21 AM

Is Atlanta on the way? We loved Fat Matt's Rib Shack. Cheap, delicious, and live music, too.

suewoo Jun 23rd, 2011 07:57 AM

McCabe's in Manning SC is excellent.

Cash only and they are closed on Sundays.

Here's a link to the NC BBQ trail.

Some of those are not far off I95.

Thanks for your replies, any other suggestions welcome!

DancingBearMD Jun 23rd, 2011 08:31 AM

Have stopped many times in Wilson for eastern NC style pork barbecue, very convenient to get on and off of I-95. First choice would be Parker's (fried chicken there is also great), second choice Bill's (aka Bill Ellis).

DancingBearMD Jun 23rd, 2011 08:32 AM

BTW those two are numbers 5 and 6 on the NC BBQ Trail that suewoo posted.

sf7307 Jun 23rd, 2011 08:45 AM

I may have to make a special trip - we LOVE Carolina pulled pork, and can't find anyplace to get it out here!

bachslunch Jun 23rd, 2011 10:13 AM

In Atlanta, I liked both Fox Brothers and Rolling Bones for BBQ. For Carolina mustard sauce style BBQ, Bessinger's in Charleston, SC, does a decent version of this.

There are a whole host of BBQ places in North Carolina, with sauces ranging from vinegar-and-peppers to ketchup based to something in between. Places I've seen listed that are supposed to be good include Lexington BBQ (Lexington), The Pit (Raleigh), Clyde Cooper's (Raleigh), and Allen and Son (Chapel Hill). Haven't been to any of these.

Definitely do a search over at the Chowhound website for good info on food.

Travelgirl_b, do you know your route?

Orlando_Vic Jun 23rd, 2011 07:13 PM

In Savannah: Wiley's Championship BBQ. Quite simply, the best BBQ place I've ever visited. Check out their Tripadvisor reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...h_Georgia.html

Hi Suewoo
Just working on our route at the moment, trying to work out where to stay between washington and savannah, heres my post, have any suggestions?

Road trip from Washington DC - Savannah
Does anyone know a route that they’d recommend or places to visit on the way? We are thinking of driving through the blur ridge parkway, stopping in Asheville then onto charleston.

Interested in getting there over the course of 3 days and keen to see as much of the States between as possible

Please reply with your suggestions thanks

Travelgirl_b Jun 24th, 2011 01:12 AM

ooops, I meant the blue ridge parkway!

Gretchen Jun 24th, 2011 05:22 AM

Eastern NC is the best BBQ for that part of NC!! Goldsboro might be a little off the direct route but Wilber's and Scott's are legendary for original BBQ houses. They date from teh 20's, and Scott's is black owned, but even those long years, white folk sought it out.
If anyone is interested, I can flat tell you how to make it at home and enjoy it any time you want. It is disturbingly easy to make delicious pulled pork.

obxgirl Jun 24th, 2011 06:29 AM

Allman's is worth a stop and not far off of I95 in Fredericksburg. Don't go to their drive thru right off the highway but the original one closer to the university on Jeff Davis Highway.

If you're coming from DC you might already be familiar with Dixie Bones in Woodbridge -- I like that place. It's got a satellite spawn, Post 401, in Fredericksburg that I've only tried once and wasn't crazy about. Way too salty.

These places are good but some might think they fall a little short of the stellar stuff you can get in NC and SC. It will tide you over until you can get there.

Littleman has reposted his "cut and paste list" from a guidebook again ;)

suewoo Jul 6th, 2011 02:13 PM

I guess the OP needs to decide whether she'll take the western, interesting, longer route, or the eastern, faster boring route. Both have their pros and cons. And we can make recs depending on what you chose. If it were me and I had the time, I'd go down 81 and stop at Peaks of Otter. I haven't been in a while, but my friends tell me it's still good.

sharona Jul 6th, 2011 02:25 PM

Gretchen, I would love to have your recipe. I use the recipe from "The Thrill of the Grill" by Chris Schlesinger. It's good but I suspect there are better recipes.

starrs Jul 6th, 2011 02:33 PM

If the OP goes through Georgia, I have three recommendations -

In the mountains - Tomlin's - next to the Osage farmer's market in Dillard (take with you or eat at the picnic tables).
It's a tiny building selling fabulous BBQ -
http://www.dillardgeorgia.com/tomlin...-catering-inc/

"In June of 2009 the Tomlins were selected as one of the top 5 Pulled Pork Sandwiches in America on LIVE with Regis & Kelly’s “ultimate Hometown Grilling Challenge."

http://www.tomlinbbq.com/

In Decatur (Atlanta) -
http://www.maddysribs.com/
One of the former owner's of Matt's Rib Shack opened Maddy's and I like it better

In the country - outside Jackson (or in Macon)
http://www.freshairbarbecue.com/

I also like the Blind Pig near there and if you were a friend of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes you may be interested in stopping at the tiny town of Juliette GA and eat at the Whistle Stop -
http://www.thewhistlestopcafe.com/

<i>location of one of the most infamous BBQ scenes EVER ;)
