Best BBQ in Greenboro vicinity?

I am posting this message for a friend who is currently driving from Atlanta up to New York. He (like me) is a huge fan of barbeque, and he knows that North Carolina is famous for the stuff. He will be in the Greenboro/Winston-Salem area tomorrow night, and he asked me to see if I could find a good BBQ joint for him. Thanks for any recommendations!

Ah, bbq. Since you're driving up I-85, stop by the town of Lexington for a whole lot of choices. The most famous is Lexington BBQ (what a name right).

If you have time, see if your public library has a copy of Bob Garnder's guide to NC bbq (I don't know the exact title).

Try Stameys in Greensboro. It's one of the better ones and not too expensive. The area is real nice. It's by the coliseum. Make sure you try the Peach Cobbler.

Lexington would be the place to get the BBQ. Just off I85.

Stamey's in Greensboro! The book by Bob Garner is "North Carolina Barbeque." Every town in N.C. claims it's barbeque is the best.......;-). Believe me, your friend will not be disappointed in Stamey's...........

I like Lexington Barbecue the best.

I prefer the vinegar-based 'cue, and I loooove their iced tea!

It's pretty easy to get to and loaded with "local color" - especially if you go during the week at lunchtime.

For lunch the next day, try Bob's bbq in Creedmoor, NC. Just off I-85 (the Creedmoor exit). Turn right and go maybe 1/2 mile.

After driving through the I-85 work zone, a stop for 'cue and tea is needed.

Thanks bonniebroad for the name of the book (and the right spelling of his name!)

My friend reminded me of The Lexington. It too is very good. I would try and see if Stameys and The Lexington have a WEB site. It may come down to which one is more convenient to get to. Good Ruck!

This may be too far out of your friend's way, but it is in the vicinity. The Blue Mist in Asheboro...

Thanks for these great responses.... I'm very jealous that I'm the one up here in New York while my friend is on the road in BBQ country! But I duly called him and imparted your words of advice. On his behalf, I thank you.

So mattydale....did your friend eat at any of these places?

He told me he went to Stamey's and really enjoyed it. So much so that one of his first stops when he got into New York was the barbeque restaurant Blue Smoke, probably the closest thing we have up here to the real McCoy. I guess Stamey's really put him in the 'cue mood.

Thanks for the help!!
