best base for wine country visit

My wife and I are planning our first visit to the California wine country (Sonoma/Napa region); we will be joined by our 20-something son and daughter-in-law. What town or area would be the best base for exploring the region. We would like to visit some vineyards and good restaurants, but also do some outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, or kayaking. We will probably want to rent a small house or stay at a B&B.
Thanks!

Ditto. Lovely little town with a beautiful town square, excellent restaurants, lots of nice little shops.

Another vote for Healdsburg, can recommend the Grape Leaf Inn...or the Farmhouse Inn, actually in Forrestville, a dew miles away. Also used VRBO to find a nice house on the edge of Healdsburg last year.

Thanks -- very helpful advice from all.
We used the VRBO site to find what sounds like a delightful house, the "Wine Country Farmhouse" at Healdsburg Country Gardens Lodging. Has anyone stayed there?
