Best Barbecue in Memphis?
What's been generally regarded as the absolute best barbecue in Memphis, TN?
|
"Best" is a very subjective term. Do you like "wet" with a sauce that contains some vinegar or the "dry" which is more common in Kansas City style?
|
Tom nails it. It's like asking "What are the best shoes?" Tom nails it. My experience has not left me wild about Memphis BBQ, but I am willing to try it twenty or thirty more times to see if I am wrong. I do think Memphis ribs are good, though.

I enjoy Corky's on E. Poplar. Pulled Pork is my favorite. Many sides are excellent.
Rendezvous is famous for dry rub ribs. |
I don't like Corky's and Nealy's that much(although, sounds good right now). That said, they are super popular. Rendevouz uses oregano in their dry rub, so that is a distinct flavor that sets them apart from some(they have Italian roots). I find Corky's to be commercialized. I find Nealy's to be overly sweet.
Personally, my favorite place to eat is Blues City Cafe(just down the street from Rendevouz). They have some very very good ribs and other items too. I like their seafood augratin(more of a seafood cheesy dip). Central BBQ is a pretty good one. You might want to try Payne's and A&R. I say try as many as you can, even the ones above that I said aren'y my favorites are really good bbq and each place has sides that are nicely done too. Although, not bbq, another must try in Memphis is Gus's Fried Chicken. |
Well, spirobulldog, you are dead on about Gus's, so I guess I will have to work through your BBQ recommendations when I am out that way again.
