Best Area/Streets in Midtown for Hotel Search
Forget the price right now, I'm just considering location/streets for our hotel search. In Midtown from Broadway to Lexington, and Central Park to 46th street, what streets would you recommend for having the best of everything: location for walking, good restaurants, convenience to subway, and city charm ? Not 100% set on Times Square area, but also don't want to be on a quiet street away from everything. Looking for comments and suggestions. Thank you in advance.

I think at this point you are nit-picking. One could argue that in any given block within that area there are more or better restaurants than another, but it is a pretty minor difference. There really is no reason to choose one place over another within that entire area based on location, as it is all pretty uniform.

No matter where you stay in that area, you'll never be more than a few blocks from a subway. There's not an awful lot of charm in Midtown except perhaps on Central Park South. It's one great big business-y, touristy area. There are no quiet streets! However...the further east you go, the less of a "madhouse" it is because most tourists tend to hang out right around Times Square. 5th Avenue can be nuts, too, with all the shoppers.

Our favorite is 44th between 5th/6th where the Algonquin, Sofitel, Royalton, Mansfield, etc. are located. It's a quiet street, but a short walk from the theaters, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, with subway stations in every direction. And, it's right around the corner from the lovely Bryant Park. But, it's really best to select your hotel location after you've decided where you'll be going during your visit. You never know when it will be hot, cold, raining, and you'll have to walk a ways. Even so, I always book with Priceline or Hotwire now. You just can't go wrong with a 4* or above. Why pay more? Every hotel and it's location has its plusses and minuses.

We've stayed in NYC many times and we have found that we like Central Park South the best for location. We stayed at Essex House the last time and were treated like royalty. Truthfully, their service exceeded Ritz Carlton! Essex House is close to everything, yet has some space due to the park. Enjoy!

If you're going to a lot of Broadway shows, West 44th Street bet. 5th & 6th Avenues, as Donna mentioned, is a great location. I would never suggest staying directly in the Times Square area.
My choice would be in the 50s as it's close enough to theater, restaurants and shopping. Central Park South is very nice and the park is right across the street if you could snag a room with a view. All the famous stores like Tiffany's, Disney, Bergdorf Goodman are close by.
West 55th and 56th Streets between 5th & 6th Avenues are known as restaurant rows - one after another and some are very good. You would have access to various bus lines and subways.
