Best Amish Site to visit
Would like to take a trip to see the Amish lifestyle. I live in Chicago and have heard that there are communities in Indiana. Which is the best to go and see, . . .Amish Acres or the one in Shipshawna, Indiana? Or, are there others in Eastern states that top these areas?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Ohio has the largest Amish population in the world. Holmes County has the greatest concentration with great towns, shopping & of course, food!

Shipshawna, Indiana has become very commericalized. I have not been in 20 years but even then they were building big hotels, etc and had pretty much wiped out the Amish feel. I am sure that you will see Amish people coming into town for provisions or work but it really does not have the feel that it had even 25 years ago.

Absolutely HOlmes County in Ohio. You will love Berlin, park your car and walk: http://www.experience-ohio-amish-cou...rlin-ohio.html Drive Sugar Creek, Millersburg, Walnut Creek...the whole area is full of Amish farms. Der Dutchman in Walnut Creek is a fine buffet and I believe it has a B&B on the property, I will look and see.

Yes, It does have an Inn: http://www.dhgroup.com/en/wc/wc-carlisle-inn.php We have eaten at the restaurant and enjoyed it very much and the Inn looked very nice and clean. Also, Sugarcreek has an Inn and I believe their restaurant is The Dutch..something These areas have beautiful clean country side living.

The restaurant in Sugarcreek is the Dutch Valley Restaurant & there is an inn on site. It is owned by the same corporation as the Carlisle Inn & Der Dutchman Restaurant in Walnut Creek. All are wonderful.
There is also an awesome winery just a couple miles up the road from Dutch Valley called Breitenbach Winery. Amazing wines & food.

We have been to Amish country in Ohio many times and I do believe it is the best, but since you are in Chicago, you are closer to Indiana and we also enjoyed going to the Shipshawna Area. All of the Amish Areas (also PA) have become much more commercialized than they were years ago, but they are still fun. Try driving around on the back roads as that is the most fun in my opinion. Have fun.
