Best 2-wk solo trip destination from U.S.?
 

My husband is taking a solo trip this year, sometime between Labor Day and Halloween. He wanted to spend 6 weeks in Australia, but his schedule has changed and he can only take about two weeks.

I'm looking for ideas for this trip -- Australia seems too big and too far away for a two week trip; but he really wants an adventure. He's outdoorsy, LOVES to sail, would like to go somewhere he's not likely to ever go again.

I'd love some help. We go to Mexico a lot, so that's out; he lived in Canada so no go; he's been to Alaska, too, so rule that out.

Well if I were sending my husband away on a solo trip, I'd want to get something out of it....

If he's that outdoorsy adventuresome that he wants to leave you at home, I'd suggest one of those environmental, scientific research tours that's a working vacation/adventure. You know - tracking spinner dolphins, canadian geese, taking reef samples, testing waters, erosian........you know one of those trips that could be life affirming, good for the earth and a tax writeoff........just a thought!

Hill walking in southern Scotland for a few days, then hop a cheap flight to Hamburg and get on the scheduled freighter that crosses to Montreal - around 8 days on the water. As a sailor he'll probably have a ball running around the bridge, engine room, etc.

I took a two-month solo trip to Australia and NZ when I was between jobs; my husband met up with me in Fiji. He's been working like a dog and has time to take the trip; I'm psyched for him to get away from phones, pagers, etc and really decompress. I feel lucky to be in a marriage that allows space for each individual.

Has your husband ever thought about going to South Africa? Now there is an outdoor adventure!

Iceland and Greenland are great for outdoor adventures. He would be able to do a fair bit in two weeks, as it's only a five hour flight to Iceland. You can fly to eastern Greenland from Reykjavik city airport.

Hiking, horses, boats, and terrific landscape: Iceland's got a lot going on.

Have a look at the Azores. Supposedly beautiful and somewhat undiscovered (shhh). Direct flights from Boston. Good sailing opportunity. Several islands to discover over a 2 week period.
