Bermuda TOO? Still upside down
 

The previous post I had on Bermuda has only caused more anxiety in picking this island for a trip. The word still seems to be ... Bermuda is the BEST yet there seems to be nothing to do?

A tour of a glass factory may rev-up the motor of some folks and a nature preserve may ignite a spark of a blue-haired granny but I'm not sure that would merit an entire trip for me.

I love a place with character and Bermuda sounds like it is not lacking in this category. It sounds like it is the perfect place for someone who wants to spend a week with a good book, I want all this but you must remember I'M BIG_DADDY! Got to please my little lady and kid somehow?

Give me some meat to bite into. I'm a meat and potato's kind of guy. Hunting is fun to do while on vacation. ALso I need a little risque entertainment...Big_Daddy is still alive you know!

Bermuda is not the place for risque entertainment or hunting. Bermuda is the place for walking or biking the Bermuda Railway Trail, swimming or snorkeling the crystal clear water over Confederate Blockade Runner ships, watching the boat parade at Christmas time, sailing, walking on the most beautiful beaches, riding your moped across the islands, visiting Dockyard and its museum, visiting St. George, the site of the original settlements.

are there actually ship wrecks in shallow enough water to snorkle ?

Wonder how you are going to tote junior around considering you cannot rent a car.

Bermuda was a bore. The pros were it was a short flight from Boston and it ends there. The weather is not "tropical", but it is warmer than here. Everything is closed on Sunday so if and when it rains, there is very little to do. Food was overpriced, getting around was tough.

Save the trip for when you are old, Big Daddy.

We took two small children to Bermuda for 10 days. Stayed in a beautiful resort, went swimming every day, got to go to the Cricket matches that year! Shopped in town, went to a different restaurant each night.
We were unable to rent a car. We were unable to rent a bike/scooter, I would not have been able to drive one with a child behind me.
If all you want to do is eat and lie on the beach, it is a great relaxing and pretty vacation.
Whatever you choose, Have fun!

I don't understand why you chose to go to Bermuda if it doesn't fit the bill of what you are looking for. There are many warm beachy islands out there, so if you are so down on Bermuda, why bother wasting the money going? I didn't see the other thread so perhaps I missed the reason why you feel you must go to Bermuda.

I love Bermuda because it is a short flight from NYC and makes a nice long weekend. Great restaurants, great beaches...I also don't have to haul around kids, so that might be a concern as mentioned above (no car rentals).

The reason there are 8 different major destination boards here, each with many sub-categories is that none of us have exactly the same travel preferences. That is why, Big Daddy, I never consider hunting possibilities or quantity of meat available when I research a vacation spot - and I suspect you would have no interest in the things I seek on vacation - to each his/her own. Good thing there are thousands of places to go to.

Sorry I seem to have offended some here. "Give me some meat to bite into" was referring to substance - things to do on Bermuda. The hunting and risque enter. were just a joke. I can't sleep at night b/c I have loads of animals nuzzled on every corner and cranny of the bed.

In response to why i want to go there - Bermuda sounds intriguing! I'm into photography and relaxation with a decent mix of activities. Bermuda sounds perfect with the one concern - nobody can tell me what to do there except absorb the place, which is probably enough for me but perhaps not my son.

Our children were in the pools all day, we took them to the beaches, into town, we walked a lot, we went to those crazy Cricket matches :) and played a lot of games.
We ate out all over the islands and just relaxed.
I think another island might have more for you, if someone else wants to do more than absorb the beauty of the place.

We have been to Bermuda for our honeymoon, a weeks trip with the kids, and for our 25th. We love the island for many of the same reasons stated by other posters. I won't defend my choice of vacation but will tell you some of the things we did with our sons who were about 10 and 13 at the time.

They spent a lot of time in the pool, at the beach, and snokeling. We took them on snokeling excursions and they loved it! We also visited the crystal caves and afterwards we had lunch at the Swizzle Inn and for dessert we went to Baileys for ice cream. Our mode of transportation was cab or bus and we had fun and laughs trying to figure out our way around. We also took them to a driving range to hit a couple of buckets and then played miniature golf. We shopped, explored the island, took ferry rides, and ate. There is also a zoo and aquarium but we didn't visit them but I'm sure younger children would enjoy them.

During the summer, you can sit by the harbour and watch the little kiddies maneuvering their sailboats at sail school or drool over the lovely yachts - the views are simple but yet breathtaking.

It's a quiet and beautiful island (the fauna is outstanding) and it's very expensive, especially with kids but it is a kid friendly place. It's not the 'disney land' of islands - no glizty lights and attractions or gambling but that's what makes it appealing to many.

Personally speaking, if I have to be sold on a location for vacation than it's probably not the place for me. Whatever you decide, I hope you and your family have a wonderful time.

Took our oldest when she was 2 years. She greatly enjoyed a ferry cruise in the Great Sound, the view from Gibb's Hill Lighthouse, Southampton, the replica of the Deliverance (ship) on Ordnance Is., St. George (I enjoyed the ducking stool which I aim to present to my mother-in-law someday), walking the ramparts at Dockyard and gazing at grazing sheep, the beaches of Southampton such as Horseshoe, and Warwick, such as Jobson's Cove. She also enjoyed riding the pink busses w/ their stadium seats and strolling along Front Street, Hamilton, looking at cruise ships and horse drawn carriages. There's a "bird cage" downtown Hamilton where a traffic bobbie perches and a number of galleries and shops along Front Street. I hear that the aquarium is worth a visit. The snorkeling is extremely good in shallow water. Plenty of shipwrecks-the island is ringed by reefs.

This is what we did in Bermuda for 3 days. (We were on a cruise docked for 3 days).

First afternoon - had lunch, shopped, visited a really old church. Husband and 2 teenagers went helmet diving. That evening watched local street festival with entertainments.

Next day went to beach, snorkled. In evening at at local restaurant with entertainment. (music)

Next day, visited old fort, caves, while on local bus got to see hurricane damage from storm a few months before.

Final AM. Rented ocean kayaks for a few hours.

Bermuda is charming and wonderful but probably not for you at the moment. Plenty to do in the 5 days we spent there but we didn't have a rush around attitude. I think you need to go with a relaxed feeling and not worry too much about your itinerary. Much more appropriate for a honeymoon or any anniversary after 10 or 15 years. It's also very expensive compared to other destinations but since you are comparing to HI, you probably aren't worried too much about expense.

We took our kids to Bermuda at ages 9 and 10 and they loved it. It is quiet at night. Every hotel has some light entertainment. It has very good food and nice beaches. We did a dolphin quest experience and the kids loved that. We spent most of our time going from beach to pool to hot tub and back again and then up to the main house for afternoon tea and cakes. The town is cute and the island is friendly. You can take the bus anywhere safely. My sister in law brought a stroller on with two boys aged 3 and 5 at the time. It is not just blue hairs that like it. It is a relaxing and beautiful place. We also had no tv and the kids did not miss it.(I did a little.) If you need more action, we enjoyed Aruba. Lot's of watersports there. Not as pretty, very arid island. Big hotels with fancy pools and casinos. Definitely more action, but also safe and friendly.

Doesn't Bermuda count as part of the Caribbean? Maybe not. I'm wondering why the post isn't on the other board.

Personally I know I've never considered it because of being so far north (relatively speaking) it doesn't have the HOT weather that I look for in "the islands".

Bermuda is gorgeous and I hope to return again in the next couple of years. We stayed at Elbow Beach on previous trips - rented scooters and also used the bus; went to the grotto, maritime museum, went horseback riding, played golf, snorkeled, swam, body surfed, little shopping, etc. The place is charming - lots to photograph. Depending on the time of year, you'll have more than enough to do.

Don't look for Bermuda on any map of the Caribbean Sea, unless the map also "counts" North Carolina there. It's about 600 miles due east of NC in the North Atlantic.
Bermuda is subdued. If you seek risque entertainment you might try Atlantic City; if you want hunting, try finding a rental car on Bermuda.

Oh, good! We can re-ignite the fight about under which board Bermuda posts belong. Generally, they end up under Caribbean - because any other board is even more absurd.

Don't care a lick where Bermuda posts are situated. Do care about where Bermuda is placed on a map; elastic geography on a travel board is misplaced.
