Berkeley Springs - Shepherdstown
Our family will stay overnight in Berkeley Springs this weekend (Oct. 18-19) and will drive through Shepherdstown on our way back home to northern VA.
What recommendations are there for a kid-friendly cafe or brunch spot in Berkeley Springs? Is there a state park or historical site that is worth visiting? In Shepherdstown, what restaurant or cafe would you recommend for an informal lunch or cup of coffee? |
I've not been there, but its been recommended to me from a customer. Check it out and let us all know how it goes.

In Berkeley Springs I would recommend Tari's Cafe right on the main drag. It is pretty casual, with good sandwiches, soups, salads, and burgers on the menu. Berkeley Springs Park is also right downtown, a block or two from Tari's. In Shepherdstown, coffee can be had at the Lost Dog Cafe, the Sweet Shop, or Mellow Moods - the last two also have counter-service sandwiches. There are several places for lunch but the most informal are the Blue Moon Cafe and the Carriage House Cafe (located on Princess Street) or Betty's Restaurant (on German Street). More upscale lunches can be had at about a half-dozen restaurants on German Street.

Hear a lot of good things about the restaurant, Yellow Brick Bank, in Shepherdstown.

Thanks for the great suggestions. A highlight of our trip was the drive on Route 9 from Paw Paw, WV to Berkeley Springs as the sun was setting.
We visited Tari's Cafe for dinner, which was a nice and kid-friendly spot, especially in the dining room with a TV that provided just the right amount of background noise and easy access to the side exit when the boys became restless. The next morning, I enjoyed a dip in the warm spa at Berkeley Springs. Afterwards, we had a coffee break and filled up our plastic container (for $1) with spring water. In Shepherdstown, my wife and really enjoyed the Yellow Brick Bank restaurant for lunch (thank you LySun for this tip!). The sunny annex to the right was spacious for a kid's stroller - our 3 year old was sleeping peacefully :) and the salad with heirloom tomatoes and Shepherd's pie were especially delicious. We saw quite a few kids at the Blue Moon Cafe, so might try that on a future visit. Our drive back to Washington DC on Route 9 was very peaceful with the fall foliage approaching near peak conditions. I hope we'll have a chance to visit again! |
Glad you had a good time and good food. Come back soon! Next summer, head up to our mountains in Canaan Valley for a lot of fun.
