Bennington, VT Lodgings?
 

I will be in Bennington July 27-29. Anyone have a local B&B or hotel to recommend? How about restaurants? Thanks!

I stayed at the Super 8 there this past winter on a ski trip. It was a nice room for the money. There was a great Italian restaurant just about a block or so down the street that is attached to another hotel. It is a bar/restaurant. Someone at the counter at the Super 8 recommended it. The food was so good (presentation, flavor, quantity, service) that I tipped the chef. I rarely do this and no I'm not being paid to say this. I live in Delaware and don't know anyone in Bennington.

Head to Williamstown, MA (a short drive away) and eat at the Main Street Cafe. It's an excellent restaurant specializing in Northern Italian cuisine.

Head north about 1/2 hour on route 7 to Manchester. Good restaurants here include The Perfect Wife (Continental) on Rte 11/30, The Inn at Willow Pond (Rte 7A - Italian),The Swiss House (Swiss) on 11/30 out by Bromley. Stayed in Bennington at the Paradise Motor Lodge several seasons ago, better inns and hotels in Manchester. BUT, while in Bennington, do not miss breakfast at the Blue Benn Diner. It is a landmark and the food is fantastic!

For the sake of those going to Bennington, just a few notes on our brief trip. We ended up staying at the Apple Valley Inn on Route 7 South, about a mile and a half south of the center of town. We stayed there because finances got tight and they offered a good rate including AAA discount, but it was just mediocre, although very clean. Two very good lunches: one at the Madison Brewery and one at Carmody's, both on Main Street. We tried to go to the Blue Benn, but the line was out the door and we just didn't have time to wait (maybe next time). We had dinner at the Vermont Steak House, which had very friendly wait staff but I ordered stuffed shrimp which came swimming in about a pound of grease...yuk. We did get to see the cemetery where Robert Frost is buried. Thanks to all who shared their suggestions in this post and one other.

Ruth...glad you saw Frost's grave site. It's a humble resting spot but very fitting somehow. Were there cigars and coins on it while you were there? Wish I understood the significance of that. Hope you went into the church..magnificent in its simplicity! <BR> <BR>

No, CMcDaniel, no cigars or coins, although I wondered if there would be, as you had mentioned that. I didn't go into the church. As I mentioned, it was a quick, somewhat hurried trip, as I was picking my daughter up from the college and just wanted to expand that into a little getaway. I hope to plan a future southern Vermont excursion and be able to do and see more in a more leisurely way.
