Beaverkill ny (Catskills)
 

That's where we're going tommorrow for a wedding. Bethesda md to Beaverkill via Scranton pa. About 6 hours plus stops. Anybody know anything about Beaverkill?

Never heard of it.

As far as I can tell there is no town called Beaver Kill but there is a small river called Beaver Kill in the Catskills. There is also a Beaver Kill Inn near Livingston Manor which is a well known town.

As you know lill is a dutch word for a creek. And there is also a campsite with the same site. One can only hope your wedding is indoors.

Adu, once again you've provided us very good advice for a New York trip. The wedding is at the beaver kill inn. We have a rental house for family in youngsville. I should have asked if anybody's been to youngsville. Or livingston manor. Well, too late now. I can't double post and monopolize the us forum. Also I forgot to tag the question New York. An embarrassing error for an experienced fodorite. Anyway, i'm sure it will turn out ok. We got a gps. It's not my wedding.

Have fun in the Catskills with the detour through Scranton.

We're not quite to Scranton yet. I'm told we're going to the Birkshires, not the Catskills or the Adarondaks. Or the Poconos. There are certainly more places that it's not than places that it is. I'm in the back seat now. There are a lot of trees up here. I'm worried we won't have a use for them now that grocery stores charge five cents for paper bags. I may have mentioned this concern before. People in Vermont thought there weren't enough trees. I don't think there are enough paper bags. But I'm willing to let that go.

Now we're driving by Carbondale. What an interesting name. Pride in carbon. That's something you don't see anymore. There are a bunch of wind power generators outside of town. Heresy!

But wait, are you going to Livingston Manor vicinity or to the Berkshires? On a meta level, they might be all the same (Poconos, Catskills, Adirondacks, Berkshires, VT...), but in reality they are far FAR apart!

As for your OP... that is one part of the Catskills for which I have no clue. You'll have to do a TR :D

Get a new family or a new GPS. Now I have no idea where you going but that makes two of us. Livingston Manor is the Catskills.

As a ute I worked in just about every town you mentioned. Since that was 50 years ago, it is probably safe to return.

Not Hershey. Heresy. Wind power in Carbondale. Honestly, do I have to explain everything? We have arrived. We are in Livingston Manor or Youngsville. I think it's the Catskils. It's still a little unclear. We are in a rental house another family member rented for a bunch of us. The house belongs to somebody who collects paint by number paintings. There's a whole room full of paint by number paintings. Maybe mine is there somewhere. I remember doing paint by number when I was younger. Week before last, actually. Anyway, we shopped at Pecks Market in Jeffersonville. Cereal was very expensive. Not much happening here. I think new yorkers like that. Fresh air, you can hear birds, that sort of thing. Country.

If you're in Livingston Manor, you're in the Catskills. We used to go to the Catskills for summer vacation when I was 4 or 5, and we went to Livington Manor for worms for fishing.

There is less than nothing going on in that part of New York, which is I guess why people live there.

You are in The Catskills and I think you can some Hershey's at Peck's Market.

You are in the heart in what was called the Borscht Belt. My grandmother and my parents and 1,000's of other Jews escaped from the heat of the city during the summer and looked forward to the country. The big places were Grossinger's, Kutscher's and The Concord. But there were scores of smaller places. It became a little corny for my generation but I used to work there as a waiter and a counselor, so I could escape the City for a while. Once I worked as counselor during some Jewish holiday. I had stayed up the night before and fell asleep watching the kids and they all ran away. Needless to say, I did not get any tips.

We had dinner at the Beaverkill Valley Inn where the wedding is tomorrow. Bunch of speeches. Everybody favored the wedding. Beaverkill Valley Inn is a fancy place. Sorta like Shelburne Farms in Vermont. I think Rockefeller related. Croquet sort of place. Fly fishing. Do you use worms for fly fishing? I guess not, or you'd call it worm fishing. Thanks everybody for helping us find out where we are. Sorry about the tips Adu.

This area is legendary turf for fly fishers..and home to the famous Trout Parade, which you , sadly, have missed.

We missed the trout parade but we had a nice breakfast, went swimming at the creek under the Beaverkill Covered Bridge, and went swimming again at the Mongaup State Park. Everywhere we've been so far seems to be in Livingston Manor, which may make up most of the Catskills. Now we've showered (well, I have) and we're ready (well I am) for the wedding. I'll have to get us to the church (well, inn) on time.

You have a Ptolemaic view of Livingston Manor regarding the Catskills. Remember Woodstock took place on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel which in the Catskills as well.

I'm told we're not far from Woodstock. I'm thinking it may be one of Livingston Manor's outer suburbs. Wedding was nice. This morning we drive back to regular life. Thanks again to Adu and others for guidance.
