I've always used TX62/73/87 instead of I-10 between Winnie and Orange.
From Lafayette to Houston, get off at Exit 873. Make a left onto TX62/73 at lights.
Go straigh for about 6 miles (one light in middle) to end of road. Bear right onto TX73/87. You'll pass through Bridge City with 3 traffic lights. It's a wide 3-lane each way there, but speed limit is only 45mph. Don't speed.
After that it's almost all freeway, through Port Arthur, then one ramp and I believe one traffic light on TX73. Just follow the "Houston" signs. TX73 rejoins I-10 in Winnie, bypassing all the construction as well as Beaumont.
Traffic is much much lighter than I-10, and distance is about 3-4 miles longer. Even if there's no construction, I'd still go this way because of light traffic. Between Port Arthur and Winnie, one can really relax for about 25 miles.
