Beaufort, SC - only 4-6 hours

On my solo driving trip Boston-Florida RT I decided to stay for 1 night in Beaufort. I have already been to Charleston and Savannah, and although was in Beaufort 25 years ago - it was July to attend my sister's wedding at Parris Island and all I remember is the heat and mosquitoes.

Will be arriving early afternoon and leaving the next morning - in March. Suggestions on what I might want to see in such a short time and dinner suggestion for someplace casual. Will be staying right on the bay.

Beaufort is a neat town. Is your sister in the Marines. My son was at Parris Island back in 1992. Plum's is a nice place to dine. Enjoy your trip.

I would go to Hunting Island. It's a state park with a beautiful maritime forest.

Last time I was there we went to St Helena Island to Gullah Grub:

They're closed on Saturdays.

Hopefully, in March, the skeeters won't be bad,

The are a few houses you can tour and the waterfront is nice. We have stayed on Fripp Island and come over for a few meals and drinks. It is a relaxed, neat town.

I agree with suewoo. Hunting Island is a great beach park, and st helena has the Penn Center (a school founded to teach freed slaves how to read), the shrimp shack, and the red piano (a shop for art and crafts). In town, next to the Beaufort town library, is a nice little cafe bookstore. You'd need to confirm these places I think I remember are still open.
