Beartooth Highway
 

Is the Beartooth Highway anything like the highway thru Rocky Mountain National Park (lots and lots of places that had narrow lanes and no guard rails - just a steep overlook)?It was a difficult drive for me. I would love to make the trip to Redlodge and go to Yellowstone that way - but am wondering about the road. Thanks for your help.

It winds quite a bit but I don't recall any narrow lanes or precipitous drops. I'm a cautious driver and it didn't bother me. Great scenery, though. Make sure to take a jacket even in the middle of summer!

No, it's nothing like that road. In fact, most of the highway has nice wide shoulders and ample places to pull off and enjoy the view. You shouldn't have any trouble if you're prone to being nervous around heights.

The largest obtacle that we encountered on the Beartooth was trying to pass bicyclists. But the drive is well worth it. It is one of the most if not the most scenic drives in the country and to skip it would certainly detract from your Yellowstone experience. Allow travel time as it may take you quite a while to navigate the narrow winding road. When I was there in 2000 they were working on the road on the downward side of towards the parks interior

I have driven over the Beartooth 8 times. One year we went up and over on the second day it was open and the drifts were still piled high.
I have not fallen off of it.
But on the other hand, I don't recall Trail Ridge Road being much more than an uphill drive.
Now the Furka Pass in Switzerland, that is a whingdinger.

I enjoyed your pictures so much. Beartooth is one of our favoritie places and our all time favorite camping spot.

Am I correct that you are campers? Have you camped at the summit?

Fabulous views, beautiful lakes and great hiking trails. One trail led to an unexpected waterfall--what fun!

Utahtea - your pictures were wonderful -thank you so much for sharing them. Bob Brown were you referring to Rocky Mountain Nat'l park being an uphill drive - I don't think so? I too have been on some pretty steep mountain passes in Europe - but I wasn't driving. I was just seeking opinions of the drive on the Beartooth Highway to see if there were guard rails and if the road was realy narrow and was trying to draw some comparison to the road thru Rocky Mountain Nat'l park - again as I said before that drive was difficult for me. Thanks to those of you that took the time to answer my concerns.

We have driven the Beartooth Hwy in our 23 1/2 ft. Motorhome. Mountain driving (as the passager) doesn't bother me at all, infact I like it. We did not camp up on the Beartooth Hwy but we did find a pull out and cooked & ate our breakfast with some really fantastic VIEWS! I just wish we had our digital camera back then!
