Beaches and Rails
I'm thinking of a california beach vacation next summer. Would a california rail pass be a good idea instead of renting a car. I know I wouldn't get is go to as many places as easily, but I think by 14 year old daughter would enjoy it, and I wouldn't have to fight the traffic

The problem is that CA does not have an integrated transportation network.

While the beach is easily accessed from Amtrak stations in San Clemente, Oceanside, Ventura and Santa Barbara, it is a major chore from San Diego, Los Angeles and anywhere north of Santa Barbara.

The rail pass is great for moving from city to city but once you arrive at a destination, you'll be trapped.

If you are planning to visit several CA beach cities, you can save on driving with the rail pass b/c you can do combined car rental deals at the major stations. Otherwise, you'll be disappointed.

Dear BerryBerry
Thank you for your advice. In your opinion, what are some of the nicer beaches for a beach vacation. I have a 14 year old daughter. She might like some surfing lessons, but we would also like to go to a swimming beach.

We just came back from Carlsbad and had a great time. The surf is just enough to learn to surf or just play in the waves. We stayed at the Carlsbad Inn and Beach Resort... highly recommend it.

Carpinteria has a lovely beach, walking distance from the Amtrak station. Good for swimming, and surfing lessons and kayak rentals available.

Cowells Beach in Santa Cruz is a good one for both swimming and surfing. The AMTRAK bus from the San Jose station to Santa Cruz isn't too bad of a ride.
