Beach and golf vacation
 

My husband and I are planning a trip for our 25th anniversary next July. We would like to stay on an ocean and he would like to play a little golf. We are looking at around 200-250 a night for lodging. We stayed at the Amelia island resort last year and loved it but would love to try something new. Atlantic or Pacific would be ok. We would love all of your suggestions for a cool vacation.

On the east coast the most popular seem to be Myrtle Beach and the St. Augustine area in Florida.

South Carolina, bar none. Look at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort. It is about 30 miles south of the gridlock of Myrtle Beach and there are basically an unlimited number of courses of every ilk for you to choose from. Fly into MB.

Hilton Head Island has 42 golf courses. About 30 on the island and 10 more just off the island. HHI has a tropical feel with an excellent beach and abundant restaurant and resort selection. The island has famous and scenic bike paths as well as biking on the beach.

HHI has an extensive selection of accomodations from fine hotels to villas with no problem hitting your price point.

July is off season for the Naples/Marco Island area. An abundance of available golf courses in the Immokalee area.
Marco Island has one of Marriott's best resorts on a white sand beach with calm and clear Gulf water. Should be able to hit your price target in July. Marco is a 20 minute drive from some of the golf, but the beach setting is fantastic and worth a little windshield time. The Lely Flamingo Golf resort is only a 10 minute drive from Marco.

Both HHI and Marco will be less crowded than Myrtle. Myrtle is a major family beach destination and every room and restaurant will be packed during peak season July. Myrtle might have over 100 courses now in a 40 mile radius, but will also have 100,000 vacationers to share with you.

In addition to the above look at Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms just outside of Charleston, Fripp Island, not far from Beaufort and Kiawah Island - all are oceanfront golf resorts.

Also check out the Cloisters at on seaIsland Georgia - great beach location and terrific golf courses.

Lastly, Myrtle Beach is the golfing capital of South Carolina - you can play a different course every morning and afternoon for a month and not play them all. The beach area does get crowded though.

I've been looking at Hammock Beach Resort in Florida and Wild Dunes in South Carolia. Which of these is best?

One is not necessarily better than the other - they are just different places. Sort of like asking which is the better steak - NY Strip or Rib Eye.

I'll say again, you don't have to go to MB to enjoy those hundred golf courses. In fact I wouldn't ever go there!!
Litchfield is just south of MB, is uncrowded even in July (at least on the beach). It is gorgeous, with the best restaurants outside of Charleston very nearby.
There is also Brookgreen Gardens and Georgetown--or even Charleston to visit when not golfing. Good shopping. Beautiful accomodations.

Pebble Beach?

Cape Cod would be cooler than the southern destinations and there are some nice courses there.
