BBQ/rib place in NY

We saw a very nice documentary on a lifestyle channel about R.U.B., a bbq restaurant in NY. Sounded interesting and a must on our next trip in 2 weeks. In travel talks on the internet things werent that positive about RUB. Any comments on your visit our other good bbq/ribs restaurant that won't break the bank

Hi Polle,

These are two great BBQ places in Manhattan:
Virgils (virgilsbbq.com) on W44th (close to Rockefeller Center) and Blue Smoke (bluesmoke.com) on E27th.

I am not familiar with R.U.B.

Your mixed reviews on RUB is consistent with those that I get from my friends here in NYC who's been there. Some like it, others don't.

Blue Smoke Grill, as suggested earlier, is a good bbq place, albeit expensive. It is, after all, one of Danny Meyer's joint - i.e. Eleven Madison, Gramercy Tavern, The Modern, and Shake Shack restaurant group.

How can I forget? My bbq-lover friend once took me to the newly-opened, then, Dinosaur Bar-be-que in 131st and 12th Ave.

We were told that this is the bbq rage in Upstate NY.

Dinosaur is very good and a lot of fun. The original is in Central NY, in Syracuse and there is also one in Rochester. Here's the webiste for more info http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/

Haven't been to the Dinosaur in NYC. But we ate at the one in Syracuse in September and thought it was very good.

I like Daisy Mae's on 11th Avenue and 46th Street. Amazing, amazing ribs. Virtually no atmosphere, although they do have big screen tvs in the back room with the tables. Very good value. They have won lots of Best in NY competitions. Did I say the ribs were amazing? Dinosaur gets good reports, as Bill mentioned. I have not been to Blue Smoke but am sure it is more pricey than these two.

I'm a long time Syracuse Dino customer, at least twice/month. :) I've been to the one in Harlem and it's top notch too.

It's definitely worth a trip to 140th Street to eat at Dinosaur.

While Blue Smoke is good, I don't consider it really really good cue. Due to some weird ccoking regulations, restaurants in NYC can't cook BBQ the true way it is supposed to be cooked.

If you want real BBQ, you should ignore the
wannabes and go to RUB. World Champion KC style Cue. Paul knows what he's doin'.

HowardR Nov 20th, 2006 05:40 AM

Oops, I meant 130th Street for Dinosaur!

ekscrunchy Nov 20th, 2006 06:15 AM

No one else here likes Daisy Mae's??

So know one here has actually eaten hat Rub? Just here say? Well I've been many times and it is excellent! Not only do i think it the best in NYC so does New York Magazine who chose them Best in NYC 2006. Village Voice chose them the best 2006 and so did Time Out NY. The guy who owns the joint is 7 time BBQ world champion.Do you think he knows something about bbq...Unless you've been to a restaurant you shouldn't comment. I suggest you try it and let us all know.....
