Thanks for the kind words!
CAPH52 - thanks for checking! I always figured it was "El" (I mean, that makes sense) but then I read somewhere that Chicagoans use L, not El. And I'm enough of a grammar nerd to care.
Lee Ann - two skeins of laceweight Malabrigo in this fabulous deep slightly-teal blue color. Mmm! I was going to make a Kernel (from the last Knitty) out of it but now I think it might be too sticky, so I'm pondering something else worthy of it. (But I've got socks and a baby sweater that have deadlines so it's going to be chilling out in its dresser drawer for awhile, just calling to me periodically...)

I'd like to add my thanks for your review, Jent.
My husband and I are planning a trip from Toronto to Chicago and we're going to stay at the same hotel and eat at Rick Bayless restos (we use his cookbooks!) We saw U2 in Toronto right after their Chicago dates and they were "seriously amazing." One question: someone told me that Chicago is not safe - is this true for tourists in the areas you visited? I note that you walked quite a bit at night, including back to the hotel. Are taxis generally hard to find? Thanks again.

jembleton, I agree with tchoiniere. We had no problems at all from a safety perspective, staying in the touristy areas (except for the craft fair, maybe). After the concert there were TONS of people walking in the same general directions we were, so although we were still walking around midnight, it was still pretty populated till we got up to the river (and even then, there were still people around and it was well lit). If I were out at 2 or 3 in the morning I'd probably take a cab home, but I think the River North and Michigan Avenue sections are fine.
There are some parts of Chicago that can be more [iffy/sketchy/choose your adjective], from the little I know. And Chicago (or any big city) definitely has a different feel than what I'm used to day to day, growing up and still living mostly in suburbia. But that certainly doesn't make it dangerous. I act the same in Chicago at night as I would if I were at home - be aware of who's around me, know where my stuff is and know where I'm going as much as possible.
As far as taxis - from the hotel, the Westin doormen will call one for you. Elsewhere, we really didn't try to find any except for the concert, but there did seem to be a lot of them.
Have a great trip!
