Baxter State Park or Moosehead lake
MDH and I are going to take your advise and spend time (couple days) in either Moosehead Lake or Baxter State Park. Any reason why we should chose one over the other? Will be there around the first of October. Suggestions on what to do?
Thanks. |
I would think there is more to do at Moosehead although i have only been there in the summer

Visited several years ago. Baxter is breathtaking but allows no "modern" camping only tents and the basics. The Moosehead Lake area has a quaint town but I don't know if camping is within walking distance. I would tend to recommend 1 nite in each.

hi bethie, i'm going to recommend greenville/moosehead lake because you are coming in oct. i live 45 mins from moosehead and about and hour+ from the park. oct will be chilly. leaves should be in color. baxter is for camping and outdoor adventure;
greenville has motels and good food. if you are coming directly from maryland do not get off on route 1 to go to either. portland to baxter would be 4hrs all highway. moosehead 4+ as from newport north you leave the interstate. rte 1 will take you like 6 days... if you pick greenville take the drive up to rockwood then south on rte 201 to bingham, then east on rte 16 to abbott then north on rte 15 back to gville, if the leaves are in color - beautiful drive. you might consider staying at kelly's landing for less expensive lodging or the www.lodgeatmooseheadlake.com, or www.blairhill.com - both very very nice. lodge more rustic maine woods decor, blair hill is victorian. be sure to eat at the black frog. very fun, good food, watch the lake. |
