Bases for Scenic Drives in Colorado?
I am planning a trip to Colorado. We especially enjoy the northern and western parts of the state and the part of Utah near the Colorado border.
I have limited mobility. My favorite travel activity is taking scenic drives.
I want suggestions for three or four places we could use as bases for day trips. We prefer places that has one-bedroom condo-type lodging with a balcony or other outdoor space.

Any of the ski resorts would work. Breckenridge gives you loops up through Steamboat, Glenwood Springs, Leadville, Aspen. A less expensive would be the Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne area.
Could move further west to Grand Junction area with tours of the wine country around Palisades or to Montrose, Quray. Your options are unlimited.

For high mountain scenery, Breckenridge is one of our favorites, but it's up at 9,600 feet if that's a concern.
Aspen is spectacular if you haven't been there, and is ~ 1,500' lower than Breck.
Leadville is even higher than Breck, but drives around there are fantastic. This is all central CO, as opposed to north or west. Buena Vista and Salida are nearby (Salida at only ~7,100') but now even farther south and east. Nice areas though.
Steamboat is nice but the scenery is somewhat more pastoral than rugged, in a Rocky Mountain way at least. We like it there.
I have not based out of Grand Junction or Palisade, but it's on the list of to-do's. Could be what you want.
Also, time of year of your trip matters a lot, and do you prefer a nice little historic town to stay in, or be out in the boonies somewhere?

If you like western CO and the areas in UT near CO western border, why not consider grand junction with a drive to Flaming Gorge, Montrose with a drive to the Black Canyon. A drive from Montrose to Durango. Once in Durango take the San Juan Byway. Durango to Pagosa Springs. Durango to Moab, Arches and Canyonlands
