Baseball Tour Accomodations
 

Planning a 10-day June baseball tour with our two boys, 14 and 17. Looking for teen-friendly accomodations. We like stylish hotels, inns or lodges - prefer to avoid cookie cutter type places. Here's our itinerary (leaving from LA, have to zig zag because of game schedules):
Cleveland (1 night)
Niagara Falls (1 night)
Cooperstown (2 nights - a lake opportunity here would be great - How is the Otesaga?)
NY (3 nights - staying with friends)
Atlanta (1 night)
Chicago (2 nights)

Are you flying between some of these cities? Or do you have extra time built into your schedule?

We are flying to Cleveland, driving to Niagara Falls, Cooperstown & NY, then flying to Chicago and Atlanta. We are splitting up at one point for business/college tour purposes. We know it's a crazy schedule, but my kids have a dream of seeing all those teams in their home stadiums and we're all very good travelers.

Update: We have just decided to replace Atlanta with Detroit. Now we will be flying to Detroit, driving to Cleveland, Niagara Falls, Cooperstown and NY, then flying to Chicago. Three nights in NY, two in Chicago, one each on our road trip. Looking for hotel recommendations everywhere except Detroit & NY.

If you are planning a game at Wrigley, you should get tickets soon as they do sell out quickly (may already be sold out). Same goes for Yankee Stadium.

For Cooperstown, it is a small area that many people visit so hotels may book early. You are ahead of the Induction weekend but the HOF game is in June and is sold out. May want to jump on a hotel soon. I can't help you here as I have never stayed overnight in Cooperstown.

When I went to Detroit (5 years ago now- wow time has flown), we stayed in Livonia which is a mall area with all of your typical chain restaurants and with easy access to Comerica Park. Comerica is one of the more underrated stadiums as far as I am concerned. It is one of my favorites as I really enjoyed the game I went to there.

Theres a Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls... The boys could blow off some steam at the Waterpark... be sure you take them on the Maid of the Mist... Cave of the Winds(US side) and Whirlpool Jet Boats... they are MUST See!

In Detroit you might look at Livonia, as one previous poster suggested or Dearborn. Check the Comerica Park website for directions as there is a major road construction project and I-75 is shut down for at least a year. For stylish, you could look into staying at The Dearborn Inn - it's an historic hotel put up by Henry Ford in 1931 for visitors to Ford Motor Co. It's very convenient to I-94 to get downtown. They also have historic guest cottages behind the inn if you want something different than a hotel room (but I love the hotel). They do have a baseball fan package listed on thier website. It's a short skip from the airport, maybe 15 minutes. There's great middle eastern food all around Dearborn. If you have extra time, the Henry Ford is a great place to spend a day - either the museum or Greenfield Village.

Cubs tickets very hard to get. Don't show up outside Wrigley without them.
Also, Detroit is in a very bad neighborhood.
Cleveland is very family friendly, Cooperstown is a real treat.

You CAN actually usually get Wrigley tickets from someone outside by about the second inning at less than face value unless it is a very popular game. And Detroit stadium neighborhood is right downtown, and didn't seem particularly "bad" to me. We walked from our hotel--Marriott Courtyard, and there were lots of hotels, restaurants, casinos and fans.

We had no problem finding great seats for the Cubs on Craigslist (a week before the game).

Not the most relaxing trip - or the cheapest. But even I had fun - maybe because my expectations were so low.
