Baseball HOF
 

Planning a trip to Baseball HOF and was looking for any suggestions, ideas, tips, etc. Will be staying in Manhatten and then eventually going to Boston.

The Baseball HOF is 238.46 miles away from New York City and 241.85 miles from Boston MA.. Not a day trip from either. But there are some very fine Inns in the area, and there are other places to visit in the Cooperstown area. I like to visit the Fenimore House and look at the life masks of early American personalities.

Cooperstown is a nice area.Like Whistler stated there are some nice Inns to stay at. Also some nice shops.

Had to reply to this one. Been to HOF twice (I live in CA) and last time ( about 3 yrs ago) did a similar itinerary as yours --- started in NYC, went to Philly for a day/night, then headed north to upstate New York. Stayed there a night then drove east to Boston for a few days. (p.s. it was a baseball trip -- we saw games at Yankee Stadium, Shea, Phil, and Boston so the HOF was appropriate, All 3 boys play ball).

Its a few miles outside Cooperstown on large grounds with a great valley view. Look at the website. Check out the one lane bowling alley from 1910 where you set your own pins -- kids loved it.

We stayed at the Inn at Cooperstown in October of 2001; it's a nice, homey B&B with an excellent location, just a few blocks from the HOF and restaurants. I liked not having to drive to dinner or the HOF. We also enjoyed the Fenimore Museum, and there's a great outdoor agriculturral "museum" across the street from the Fenimore. It is made up of historic buildings moved from other locations and includes farm animals and artisans to observe. Kids seemed to love it, and we grownups liked it ,too. Although we didn't go, another couple staying at the Inn said the Oomigang (sp?)brewery gave a nice tour and I think they had lunch there.
I think you'll love the HOF itself--it's really very well done, and you could easily spend most of a day there, with a break for lunch.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the restaurants in town were for little Cooperstown. There was a homey Italian place, and the Hoffman Lane Bistro was excellent French/CA cuisine. There is a slightly grotty diner nextdoor to the HOF that wasn't great, but it was ok for a quick lunch.

I grew up in that area - there are a lot of things in between Cooperstown and NYC/Boston. Towards Boston stop in Williamstown Mass if you like art. Also Canajoharie's library/art museum. (some B&B's there as well)

There aren't really direct ways to NYC from Cooperstown but they probably will land you in the Hudson Valley somehow so look into the mansions in Hyde Park as well as Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome on a weekend. If you wander on some of the small roads you're sure to run into antique shops in that whole area, as well as B&B's.

There's plenty to do in Cooperstown besides the HOF, although that's pretty neat too. If time permits, stop by the Fennimore Art Museum. It's small but impressive. Be sure to walk the grounds down to the beautiful lake. Take in the quaint Main St. Great shops--most geared toward some aspect of baseball. You cannot go wrong with staying at any of the b&b's in town. That's probably the thing I loved most about Cooperstown--NO chain restuarants, hotels, WalMarts, etc... Just a small town feel. Like stepping back into the 50's. Oh, and don't forget to visit James Fennimore Cooper's grave. He's buried there in a small churchyard behind the HOF. Have fun!
