Base La Jolla or Coronado

Planning a trip to Ca first stop San Diego for 2 nights.
Which is better for a home base La Jolla or Coronado. Was thinking Loews in Coronado, they have a great rate.
But heard that La Jolla is nice. Planning on going to Balboa Park, Torrey Pines, skipping the zoo, we have one here. Heard there are tide pools not sure where though.
Thanks

Between the two, I would stay in La Jolla. The Lowe's is down on the silver strand with really nothing around it. You will have to do a lot more driving staying at the lowe's than if you were in La Jolla. In my opinion, the best tide pools are at Cabrillow monument in Point Loma (again much easier to get to from La Jolla). If traffic becomes an issue look to get to point loma via Ingraham street.

I agree totally with itsv. Lowes is quite isolated, nothing much around there. La Jolla, although busy at times is close to everything even walking is doable in the town. it is gorgeous and quite scenic along the coast line.

Go for La Jolla!

Any suggestions where to stay in LaJolla? 200-250 a night

I would not skip the zoo- there is nothing else like it!

I have not stayed in any of these, but you can check www.tripadvisor.com for recent comments.

This one looks gorgeous. The La Jolla shores use to be the Sea Lodge. It is located right on the beach. I know it is older, but the location is great.

Since I live in La Jolla, I would suggest it highly since Loew's is further out than the Del..
Where to stay..I love the Grande Colonial Hotel..its in the village and a block from the water..runs about $200-400 a night
La Jolla Shores hotel is oceanfront but great for hanging at the beach all day..$200-400 a night..just depends when you are coming to SD...it is usually sold out for the summer.
Hotel La Jolla is pretty cheap for LJ but I would suggest getting the highest floor on the North side.
When are you coming to SD?
If its after the summer you can get rates in the $200-250..

Hi,
I'm planning on coming around September 24th.

TahitiTams Jul 7th, 2007 10:31 AM

You should be fine on the rates of $200-250 a night..
Did you check Expedia?
Late September is a wonderful time to be in SD..
Have Fun!

We loved the Hotel Del Coronado for a base when we visited San Diego last December. We made day trips to La Jolla and Seaworld from there. :)

When we were in La Jolla, I thought the La Valencia on Prospect St. looked very nice. This is where I would like to stay if we were in La Jolla. Have fun! ***kim*** ((*))

Donna1185 - We had a great time spending 3 nights in La Jolla last August:

TahitiTams, however, is the expert when it comes to La Jolla advice, so can't go wrong with her suggestions either.

I stayed at Loews two years ago. Whilst it is a nice hotel it is rather remote - approx. three miles drive south of Coronado along the Silver Strand - and they do rather take advantage of that.

Parking was expensive (and you have no choice but to pay it as there is nowhere else to park).

What I really missed was a coffee making facility in the room. To get a coffee in the morning we had to order via room service which took a long time and was expensive (let's face it they can charge what they like being located where they are!!).

The rooms were comfortable and the beach (about ten minutes walk through an underpass to avoid the busy road) was lovely but I wouldn't stay there again. I plan to try La Jolla this year when I go in October.

it is always a tough decision whether to stay in coronado or la jolla. the loews resort is south of coronado down on the silver strand.
i would not recommend it unless you change to a hotel in coronado.

coronado is perfect for young families - you have more of a home town feel with lots of stuff to do - a beautiful beach, wonderful parks, shopping, restaurants, flat and safe streets which you can bicycle around town, a beautiful yatch club for sailing, a wonderful public golf course, tennis courts, etc all within a mile.

La Jolla is great but more crowded during the summer (which often includes Sept because the weather is so good) because La Jolla is more urban"ish" you need a car and activities are further apart.
but either place is a lot of fun.
