Base for exploring Oregon
 

My family (4 adults, a 21 year old, and 3 16 year olds) is planning a trip to Oregon in June 2025 (our first time). We're spending 3 nights along the coast and 4 nights somewhere else. It's the somewhere else I can't decide on.

I'd love some suggestions on a home base within 3-4 hours of Portland. I've looked at towns along the Columbia River and along Rt 26, nearish to Mt Hood. We love wildlife, hiking, swimming, fishing, and simply taking in the scenery. We're not planning on driving more than an hour for the day's activity. For additional context, we loved our 2024 summer vacation in Muskoka, Ontario (think conifers and hundreds of tiny lakes).

Bend is probably your best bet. The town is an outdoors mecca. There is the Three Sisters section of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. If you are willing to drive two hours one day, you could explore amazing Crater Lake National Park.

A second vote for Bend- and I live in Oregon. The is a resort not far from Bend- Sunriver which offers many activities-golf, biking, hiking, rafting, horseback riding. You can rent condos, houses- a variety of lodging. You can rent through the resort or VRBO or other property management companies. There are many small lakes close by. Elk Lake is one I would recommend- they have kayaks for rent and probably boats for rental.
Or in the town of Bend there is the Old St Francis school which I think is fun. It is an old Catholic school which was remodeled by a hotel chain in a very fun way keeping memories of the school. You can walk downtown where there are many restaurants and shops but there is a restaurant at the hotel all.
It might still be chilly or rainy in June ...

One place I recommend if you can work it out is Silver Falls State park- but its not close to Bend. It is east of Salem. There is a trail with I think 10 waterfalls- some of the falls have trails that go behind the falls and the water will be gushing out over your head. Since you will be there in June there should be a lot of water coming over.

Thanks everyone! I started scouring airbnbs around Bend. Trying to squelch my instincts to cram way too much into our vacations and take a more leisurely approach...

The "problem" with Oregon is how big the state is. And very different from the west side to the east side "of the mountains". Same like Washington. There is no one good base to explore from. You need to move around.
