nelsonian - public mass transit is a novelty for us, too, so we enjoy using it as much as possible when we travel. Ages ago, I used to ride BART into San Francisco from Concord to work every day. Now I live in a part of the country where "mass transit" translates to "add another lane to the highway, and put a toll on it." So when we've returned to SF, we ride BART even though it is not nearly so clean as it once was. Public transportation gives you a peek and some insight into people and general living in the area you are traveling.

I know you take Uber often from SFO to your home in the City. How much does it cost??? Perhaps add a Fisherman's Wharf guesstimate. Like me, SF7307 is a 45 year resident of San Francisco/peninsula. She drove to work from near SFO to the Embarcadero Center for many years. She could have driven 10 mins to the Millbrae BART station & taken BART directly to the Embarcadero Center - but I believe that was not her choice of travel mode. Care to embellish?? Or am I incorrect about you driving to work? Go Warriors Stu Dudley |
You’re correct about everything EXCEPT we no longer live there ! We sold our SF condo in December, wintered in Arizona and now we’re “on the road” without a permanent home (temporarily). Uber was about $30 from our home (the other end of the Embarcadero from FW, closer to SFO). I’d estimate $10 more to FW. |

BART from Concord is quite different than BART from SFO. From SFO, it is mostly underground and the above ground portion is through Daly City & other parts that are not interesting at all. You can't get much of a "peek" while underground. Stu Dudley |
Sorry for being unclear - was referring to my fellow passengers, actually. ;)

If nothing else, take BART to the Embarcadero and get off. Come up to street level and get a taxi THERE to Fisherman's Wharf. You can easily get one at the Hyatt hotel which you will see when you come up to street level.

A taxi from SFO will run you $50+, Lyft,/Uber $35+, BART under $20 for 2 people. If BART, exit at Embarcadero Station in SF and take Lyft/Uber from there (about $5), or catch the Muni classic F streetcar in front of the Ferry Bldg along Embarcadero (could be crowded but they are fairly frequent). You sound like an experienced traveler so you won’t have any problems using the BART fare machine. For Muni you will need $2.50 exact change (or $5 for 2 will work); enter at the front door. Discount if you are a senior. I use all three methods to get from the airport to my home in SF, depending on how much of a hassle my flight was. Mostly these days I use Muni/BART going to the airport, and Lyft to get home. |
As a follow up for anyone who might have a similar question; beside the regular BART App there is a second BART App for airport travel which we used. We were able to purchase our tickets on the App and by doing so saved approx. $6 for the two of us each way. The app is not very high tech as you need to show the electronic ticket on your phone to the station agent to enter and leave the station and they (s)he directs you to used the emergency gate to enter or exit.

Last week we arrived in SFO and took BART to the Embarcadero stop. I agree the trains don't seem to be as clean as they used to be. During our time in the city we got plenty of "peeks" at the high-priced real estate, some of which could use a paint job, and we saw the occasional street person asleep in a doorway as well as inside the Embarcadero station itself.
We decided to take a taxi back to the airport rather than using BART and it cost around $50 which was considerably more than the approx. $20 two BART tickets would have cost. That taxi was a LOT more "convenient" than waiting for some UBER or LYFT person who has helped eliminate another taxi driver job (or perhaps they are all ex-taxi drivers now, who knows?) to show up and it was faster than using BART. Was it $30 worth faster? No. |
Line F in the afternoon in June? Good luck with getting on it with luggage at any BART station. There are some buses, but with luggage your best bet would be Uber/Lyft, either from the airport, or from Embarcadero.
If you are looking for something really cheap, look into SamTrans bus from airport in the city, transferring to a MUNI bus. But this will take forever. |
Dayenu: see my post from June 25. Did take a Lyft from the Embarcadero. PS. haven’t been to San Francisco in about 25 years...still a beautiful city. |
