Barrow Alaska
I will be in Barrow, Alaska for about 8 hours this summer. Any tips on finding a tour of the city/cultural center? Where can I go to swim in the Arctic Ocean?

Well, the air temperature is only likely to be in the 40's with the water temperature about the same, so I assume you will be taking a wet suit. At least you don't have to worry about sunburn because Barrow is one of the cloudiest places in the world.

It's been years since I was up to Barrow. My wife and I did it in October 2007/2008 (?). We we there for 3 days and were fortunate to see 3 whales harvested (& did partake in some whale meat at that time).
Barrow is easy to walk. I love the museum there (see: http://www.inupiatheritage.org/). Barrow is on the coast and there is a semblance of a beach along the ocean (look at google maps/earth to see it). Depending on tide, current, etc. you should be able to find a spot to take a dip. Better yet, when you get in town, check with locals on a good/safe spot to do so. Finding a tour can be difficult. Here's a link to the TripAdvisor forum for Barrow, http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum...ow_Alaska.html , there's lots of information and/or potential contacts in it. Good luck. |
Thank you so much sdpryde! I appreciate your advice!

Years ago when Pepe's North of the Border was still open, they'd give you "Polar Bear Club" certificate for going into the Arctic Ocean. The day we did it, it was 32 degrees air temp, 34 degrees water temp. We went in just enough to be completely under and came right back out! This was in mid-August.
