Aren't there places that are direct wholesalers where you can pick up Fendi, Gucci etc. at rock-bottom prices? I'm not sure but if memory serves, it's an entire street down by the waterfront???? Sorry to be so vague but hopefully one of you natives can piece together what my memory isn't able to do! Thanks, I'd be really interested in knowing, too!

If you mean the Orchard St. area, (lower east side and the stores there are generally not open on Saturday) are some stores that sell "name" mercandise at a discount and you can even bargin for better prices.
Down in the Chinatown/Little Italy you can pick up purses and such with names on them, but they are probably fakes.
There are often listings of sample sales and clearance sales in New York Magazine.

Message tweedy, jeff,Lori, susanand mom: Thank you so much for your advice on shopping. I am 28 years old and I am actually looking for clothes that would update my looks. Thanks a lot for your advice on where to go. I would leave off Woodbury Downs. Would try all the other places. This is my first time on a newsgroup and you have all been so nice.

If you are into outlets, why not try Flemington in NJ, about the same drive as Woodbury (maybe closer)many of the same outlets(Polo, Donna Karan, Anne Klein, Ellen Tracy, Jones NY, Cole Haan, Joan and David) and NO extravagant NY sales tax on clothes!!!!

Just a comment on sales tax. It's correct that there is no sales tax on clothing on NJ (also true in PA). Im am also under the impression that there is no longer sales tax in New York City for clothing items under $110 (per item - not total purchase). I'm not certain if this applies just to the NYC tax or if it also applies to the NY state portion of the tax - perhaps someone else can verify the specifics.

Oh how could I forget - go to Secaucus, NJ. Closer than Flemington - lots of places - Andrew Marc, Harve Bernard, Calvin Klein, Jones NY, Liz Clairborne, Kasper ASL, Joan & David, etc. No sales tax on clothes in NJ. Just on the other side of the river, near the Meadowlands Sports Complex. I believe that there are buses from the Port Authority. Have fun
