Bar Hopping on New Years Eve

Friends and I are going to be in the city for New Years Eve. We were thinking about avoiding Time Square and bar hopping in the Village or the Meat Packing District. Anyone know if all of the bars in the city will have outrageous covers or just those in mid-town?

Bars all over the city will have special events. In fact I'd suggest that most NYC residents would want to avoid Times Square at all costs.

My suggestion is to call the places you're interested in and ask them directly. It's hit or miss as to who will or won't have special events that night. My bar hopping days are behind me, but given so many places are charging big covers, the places that aren't are usually more crowded.

BTW, I've been using ask.com and their city search feature more and more for these kind of things. If you type an address and the type of place, it'll give you several in the area with a link to menupage comments.

Almost all the clubs/bars in the MPD will be hosting private parties. I would definitely bar hop in the village (both East and West), which will allow a higher density of bars and a lower likelihood of annoying parties.

Map out a plan of attack using www.sheckys.com, and maybe call ahead to find out what the bar situation will be at your chosen location.

I would also avoid Midtown at all costs - generally crappy area for bars, and packed w/ tourists.

Unfortunately we can't avoid mid-town because that is where our hotel is. I figured if we got into the village or at least out of mid-town we'd avoid most of the crowds.

Sounds like the village is the place for us.

That's completely fine - I meant avoid Midtown for the bar scene. It sounds like you know what you're doing! If you can provide some demographic info (age, gender, type of bar/club/lounge) about yourself and your friends, I can help suggest certain bars in the village that might be fun.

I would just try to stay put once you get into a place after 11 or so. My friends and I did this a few years ago and the place we were in was full and not letting anybody else in after a certain point. Lots of fun!

"Bar hopping" in Manhattan may prove quite difficult. As said, many bars host private parties while many others have a large cover & all-you-can-drink once you pay it ... so hopping would be REALLY expensive.

Pick one spot and call to see what's going on there.

Our group of 4 are range between late 20's and late 30's. We'd like a bar with some "life" to it, but maybe not as much as New Years Nation. We'd definitely like a dance floor.

New Year's Nation's party is actually perfect for you ... when I went last year and in 2004 the crowd was mostly young professionals, 25-40 with the bulk of the crowd in the 28-32 range. People dress sharp and have a good time; it's not a college drunkfest.

Two in our group really like 80's music. We were thinking about Culture Club Nerveana. Any advice, concerns, raves?
