Bar Harbor to Cape Cod
 

My husband and I are planning a trip to New England for fall of 2010 (October 1st - 11th). We have about 12 days to spend from Bar Harbor to Cape Code. Need help/ideas for where to stay and what to do. I think we will be flying in to Portland, ME. Looking for lodgings - and this may be cheap of me - around $100-150 a night.

Will you be flying in at night and looking for a place around the airport to stay? Is that what you are asking? I actually think there are a lot of places to stay for this price range here in Maine. If you tell me more about what you're going to do, I might be more helpful.

We like Bar Harbor, Camden, Portsmouth NH, Newburyport MA and Boston. I know you can get good deals in Boston on Priceline and that sort of web site.

Also, that should be foliage season, so you might want to head inland a bit for that. The coast is not always the best place for color. You might want to go to Conway NH or something like that.

We always enjoy the National Parks, both for their natural beauty and uncrowded landscapes. Acadia in Maine is not to be missed and Bar Harbor is our choice for lodging when we go there. We have stayed at a number of B+B's in Bar Harbor but our favorite is the Graycote in on Holland Ave. For the price, you won't do better. They give a full breakfast, the place is spotless and the innkeepers are very helpful. Additionally, the street the inn is on (just off Cottage St as I recall) is quiet and just a short walk from town.

On the cape we head for the Cape Cod National Seashore...Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is our favorite, and was just named one of the top ten beaches in the USA again. Again, we have tried several other places to stay but hands down, Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast is our favorite. Their Eastham location, inside the park is quiet and yet central to Orleans, Wellfleet, Provincetown and Chatham. The B+B is small but roomy with private guest entrances and living rooms and one fabulous cottage with ocean views. Again, the full breakfast, impeccably clean accommodations and helpful innkeepers make Fort Hill our favorite. That is not to mention the scenic views from Fort Hill to the Atlantic, nature trails just out the door or the historical whaling captain's museum across the street.

I understand the "cheap" thing...we are always looking for cheap, clean lodgings in a good location. When we are in Cape Cod, we stay at the Seacoast Inn in Hyannis. For the past two years, they have won the Tripadvisor award for best budget lodgings in the country. It is a not a fancy place, but it is comfortable, extremely clean, and the service is incredible. You should be able to get a room well within your price range.
We will be in Bar Harbor in two weeks. We are staying at the Atlantic Eyrie, which is also within your price range. Since we have not stayed there yet, I cannot give you a recommendation, but the reviews are good.
