Bar Harbor, Maine
 

We traveled as a family of 4 from Bucks County Pa to Bar Harbor Maine. We broke the trip up with a stop in Ogunquit, Maine. I picked the spot because we had never been and thought it might be a good place to break up the drive and spend the night. We stayed at the Meadowmere Resort which was just slightly out of the primary area. About a 10 minute walk got us to town and the beach area. The resort was clean and spacious which are both priorities. The kids had a room with twin beds and the husband and I had a separate room with a king size bed. We had dinner at Jonathan's and it was overpriced. The food was OK the prices were steep....at least it was around the corner from our lodging for the night.

Ogunquit has a main street area and a beach so it is very popular. We were there on June 11th and the town was packed...I'm sure that is the case all summer long. We got ice cream and walked on the beach it was a typical tourist area. The next day we went to Perkins Cove Road and paid a small fortune for lobstah rolls at the Lobster Shack. It was good for our first roll of the season, not mind blowing.

By mid afternoon we were back in the car and on our way to Bar Harbor where we rented a VRBO for 4 nights. The VRBO worked out great with sleeping for 6 which we needed as my brother and nephew joined us a few nights. We had AC (and needed it, heat wave) and I like to have a washer/dryer and space. The location was on the far end of town which kept the noise down but was an easy walk to town/harbor.

On our first day we did an educational lobster tour. Basically they take you to a bunch of lobster cages and talk about whatever happens to be in the cage, It was informative and no one got seasick so that was good. We also did a tour on the Margaret Todd a Schooner sunset cruise which included a guitar player. That was lovely but 3 of us were freezing as the temperature change caught us unprepared. We had most of our meals out - our favorite place was McKays - we had dinner there two nights in a row. We also did the sandbar walk to Bar Island twice. And we stopped in the Abbe Museum which was very special as my brother worked on an exhibit there so we got to see his name on the credits.

We also took advantage of the proximity to Acadia National Park and spent two days trying out some minor trails, eating at Jordan Pond House (2 lunches there, the Popovers are yummy) and checking the views from Cadillac Mountain. It was a great trip and I feel like we hit the sweet spot of the shoulder season. It was not terribly crowded but I suspect the majority of tourists came in a week or two after us. Our group included three adults and three kids ages 15, 14 and 12 no one was bored and we were outside most of the time. Stopped in Camden Maine on the way home but jsut for a meal. Cute spot.

I think June is a great time to visit Maine and usually lodging is cheaper. Glad you had a good time.

Thanks for sharing your report! How was the weather itself? We have only been there in September (relatively dry with warm days and crisp nights), but I would be interested in a late spring trip.

You do have to be prepared for chilly breezes in New England. It's a cooler than normal summer here in SE Massachusetts, and the sweatshirt dealers are doing big business.

I always travel with a fleece, sweater, and rain jacket when going to Maine, even in July.

Indyhiker - sorry for the delay haven't been on Fodor's much. The weather was unusually hot for mid June. The first day and a half was the tail end of a heat wave and the remaining days were perfect. It is much cooler on the water and after the sun sets definitely bring a fleece as others have suggested.
