Banking ATM Fees on Kauai
 

Just curious about ATM Fees at banks on Kauai. There are no partner banks with BofA or my local bank here in NJ. What fees can I expect to pay using the local banks on Kauai? ((r))((b))

Sorry, don't know the answer for you Budman about Kauai. But (I am a BoA customer also) Hawaii is the one place I travel that I don't rely on my ATM card. Oahu last February I simply packed enough cash to last me and filled in with credit card a few purchases/meals.

Even though I hate bank fees, I'm going to have to bite the bullet on this one -- just was trying to figure our big a bullet I'll have to bite. ((a))

Last time I used a local bank ATM was in Myrtle Beach, and it was only $1.50, so I don't mind paying that to get out $500.00. ((b))

Are there limits on the amount of cash you can withcraw from an ATM? I thought it was $200 or is that just my bank?

I have never paid more than $1.50 per withdrawal from an ATM that was not my bank. My bank charges and additional $1.50 so it ends up being $3.00 perwithdrawal. Annoying to be sure.

Yes, my ATM card limit is $500 per day, and my wife's card is $500 -- same checking account. My bank doesn't charge any fees, so $1.50 would be just fine!! ((b))

I got cash from an ATM (not my bank) on Kauai last fall and don't remember the fee, so it must have been $2 or less. Any more than that and I get irritated enough to remember.

I have found though, that I need very little travelling cash anymore as everyone takes credit cards. I even used mine to buy a coke at Burger King the other days. Love those cash rebates!

Usually what happens is: you get charged about $1.50 by both your bank and by the owner of the ATM machine (unless you are using your own bank's ATM machine). I dumped Bank of America several years ago in favor of my credit union, which charges NO fee for using another bank's ATM. (The other bank may still charge a fee.) There is a credit union CO-OP network nationwide that allows me to use other CU's ATM machines for no fee. In Kauai, for example, there's one I could use in Lihue (I just checked).

I don't understand why people stay with banks like Bank of America? The only advantage they offered at all was that there were more branches to choose from, but my CU has been expanding and I do most of my banking online now anyway - but there are several ATMs near me that I can use for free. CUs have fewer fees, usually better rates, and probably better customer service.

I have a credit union CO-OP network ATM card. At least that's what it says on the back. Where in Lihue is the ATM machine that will take this card with no fee? Since I'm flying in, I could stop there. ((b))

Go to a store buy something and get cash back. I usually don't have to go to an ATM when I do that.

One of the largest grocery chains here in Hawai`i is Foodland...and if you use your debit card to pay, and request cash back (not sure if there is a limit) -- no bank fee! :-D
