Baltimore over New Years Eve - What to Do?
 

We are taking a long weekend in Baltimore over New Years this year. We are traveling with our two children ages 10 and 13. We will see a Ravens game on Sunday, but have an open agenda Friday and Saturday. Does anybody know where to go for good fireworks? Are there any other New Years events in Baltimore? We are staying at the Sheraton near Inner Harbor and would appreciate any suggestions.

Considering that the Sheraton is at Inner Harbor, you might have a good view of the fireworks from somewhere in the property if not your room. You might want to call the hotel to ask about that.

The kids (and adults) will enjoy the aquarium.

Thanks - our kids loved the aquarium when we saw it a couple of years ago. They have also been to Ft. McHenry and the Maryland Science Center. We don't mind going back to places we have already seen, but would like to learn about new options as well.

I'm glad to hear about fireworks at Inner Harbor - I wans't sure what (if any) New Years events to expect.

There are lots of things for New Years Eve. There is a "family-friendly" event at the convention center. There are fireworks at midnight over the inner harbour. Then the next night, they do smaller ones at 6-ish for the young kiddies.

The Science Center has expanded greatly in the past year, so even if you've been there, it's completely different. The exhibits at the aquaruim have also changed. The B&O railroad museum just re-opened after being closed for about two years. It's great!

Lexington Market is one of the oldest markets in the country and is full of everything you could want and not want to eat.
You should have no problems finding fun stuff to do. Look at the Baltimore Office of Promotions' website (maybe bop.org or .com) and they will have an extensive calendar of events around the city.

You might want to consider taking a drive to Annapolis to participate in First Night festivities (www.firstnightannapolis.org). This charming colonial town celebrates in a big, family-friendly way with performances and activities beginning in the early evening and continuing through the night at venues throughout the town. And, once you get your fill, you can head back to your hotel in Baltimore for the fireworks; if you don't have a harborview room, you need only step outside and walk a few yards for prime viewing.
