Balst from the past that is kinda funny now...
While watching Weeds on Tivo I found myself singing along to the theme song, Little Boxes. I remember singing that song when I was a kid. I knew every word but had little recollection of where/when/why...
So I Googled it and found this: Malvina Reynolds was born in San Francisco in 1900, but spent most of her life in Berkeley. 'Little Boxes' was the most popular of Malvina Reynolds's many songs. Reynolds got the inspiration for 'Little Boxes' in 1961 while driving to an engagement in Palo Alto. Legend has it that she looked up at a pastel-colored Daly City hill-side and said to her husband: "Bud, take the wheel. I feel a song coming on." Here are the words: Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of ticky-tacky, Little boxes, little boxes, Little boxes, all the same. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one And they're all made out of ticky-tacky And they all look just the same. And the people in the houses All go to the university, And they all get put in boxes, Little boxes, all the same. And there's doctors and there's lawyers And business executives, And they're all made out of ticky-tacky And they all look just the same. And they all play on the golf-course, And drink their Martini dry, And they all have pretty children, And the children go to school. And the children go to summer camp And then to the university, And they all get put in boxes And they all come out the same. And the boys go into business, And marry, and raise a family, And they all get put in boxes, Little boxes, all the same. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one And they're all made out of ticky-tacky And they all look just the same. I find it funny how it has held up all these years. I, myself am a Ticky Tacky offspring continuing the tradition. As I drive down 635 in Dallas, looking North over Valley Ranch I sing the same song... and my neighborhood is the ultimate in Ticky-Tacky. Sorry, just had to share... :) |
I remember my Mom plyain the Pete Seeger version of this (I think they still have the album).
Change pink and blue and green to various shades of beige and you'll have most modern day subdivisions. Now I have the song in my head. |
So long ago and it's as if it could have been written today!

I know that subdivision of houses that inspired that song. When I was a kid we'd drive up to Marin from Menlo Park to see family and we'd drive right by those houses in Daly City. I remember thinking' "Wow, what would it be like to live in a pink house?" They looked fake and you never saw any people in them or even evidence that anyone lived there.

Haven't thought about that song in years. But now as I drive around North Dallas, Plano, and Frisco, I know I'll never get it out of my head. Thanks for the laughs.
