ball of string?

Somewhere I passed a post of the "world's largest ball of string" - I think it was South or North Dakota, Wyoming, or Colorado???

Anyone know where this is? If it is not far out of my way next year, I would stop "just to say I did...! "

Merilee Aug 13th, 2002 12:47 PM

The largest ball of twine is in Cawker City, Kansas and on every third weekend in August the town has a fun festival to celebrate it.

Go to the the cheesiest tourist traps thread.

sigmund Aug 13th, 2002 03:09 PM

That someone would go any distance out of his/her way to see a ball of string....hmmm!!!!

Pam Aug 13th, 2002 04:21 PM

Isn't there only one 3rd weekend in August?

Just wondering...

diane Aug 13th, 2002 05:18 PM

Diane- Yep,one EVERY YEAR. :)

Merilee Aug 14th, 2002 07:00 AM

Every third weekend in August implies that it is held every year.

For all you want to know about the "world's largest ball of string" go to
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/MNDARtwine.html

To Pam and Diane
Merilee is right in her statement. She wrote a grammatically correct sentence and your inability to comprehend it is not her fault. This is a great travel board with valuable information, but so many smart asses ruin it.

Joe Aug 14th, 2002 07:38 AM

I'm with you RickG on both counts. Sometimes I wonder if the wise guys on this board were bullied as kids and are now using it as a means to get even with their tormentors.

Thanks everybody.

Nope - not going to go "out of my way" specifically for a ball of string (ha, ha). I will be enroute to Colorado from Ontario Canada & it is pretty much ON my way.

&, yes, I agree - it will just be one of those "silly photos" that make your album fun for others to look at...

Isn't that what vacations are all about? Seeing all the dumb stuff along with the good? (ha, ha)

Speaking of silly things to take pictures of.....

For a Canadian - I was so tempted in Alabama a year ago to stop and take a picture of dead armadillos alongside the road (upside down with their little feet stuck straight up in the air - not "crushed")

because I had never seen an armadillo before (dead or alive) & thought it was the funniest thing...

Now wish I HAD stopped that year because I didn't see any at all this time around when passing through the southern states on my return from Texas / Louisiana.

Great discussions on this Fodors...

Sylvia

Ok - went to the roadside america website. Do they charge admission to see this thing??? If so - may not drive "out of my way".

rqf Aug 14th, 2002 12:16 PM

I have no idea if there is an admission charge and none is mentioned at the Cawker City website.. You can ask by sending an email to: [email protected]

Well there is only one third weekend in August but , and it's that very big BUT if it is held every year then guess what? yes, that's right "It's held every third weekend in August" each August - each year - each third weekend

Thank you Merilee for answering so nicely and promptly.

My family and I visited the largest ball of twine in Cawker City ,Kansas in 1997.
We did drive out of our way, but we passed through beautiful Kansas countryside.
The ball is next to the hiway under a roofed enclosure, unattended and always open.We were the biggest attraction in Cawlker City that day as carloads of teenagers drove past us several times(it's a small town).
We still talk about the experience,we're glad we went.

Carol Aug 18th, 2002 04:36 AM
