I lived in the town of Bakersfield, VT, 30 years ago and am wondering if anyone out there has been to Bakersfield lately. I would love to know what it is like now. It was a tiny beautiful village in the Cold Hollow Mountains.

Well, I can tell you that Bakersfield (California)is thriving and growing by leaps and bounds with air pollution, traffic jams etc., so I hope the Vermont version still is the beautiful village you remember.

Bakersfield VT is still a small, unpolluted, undeveloped town.
I will probably be driving up through Bakersfield next Saturday en route to Canada so if there is anything in particular you want me to look for I can do that and report back

I just get "homesick" now and then and was wondering how Bakersfield is doing. Is the store next to the post office still? Are there any new buildings? I used to live in a very old farmhouse that was at the bottom of a hill that had been known way back then as Sunset Hill Farm.
Anything you can tell me is taken with joy.

We drove through Bakersfield Saturday morning on our way to the border station above Enosburg Falls. I would say the center of the town probably looks very much the way you remember. There is a country store next to the post office. most of the buildings in this part of the town are older.
As you approach and leave Bakersfield on Rte 108 there are quite a few newer homes strung out on either side of the town center.

We were running late on our way to Montreal to see a tennis match so didn't have time to try to figure out where Sunset Hill Farm might be.

One thing that is probably "new" in the last 30 years is the chester Arthur State Historic Site a few miles north of Bakersfield

thank you so much for the information. We just returned from a short trip to beautiful Vermont, and this time we made it to Bakersfield and saw the old homestead! It was the same day as the tornado. What a strange day: the wind was unusually strong and the sky over the lake heading to St. Albans was quite eerie.
It was quite a sentimental moment when we got to the house. I was hoping someone would be home, but no one was.
I did get to see the new buildings around Bakersfield, but you are right: it really is a lovely, quiet litle town much unchanged.
Thank you for replying. I truly appreciate it. I love Vermont so. We try to get there for a visit every 3 or 4 years. If it is not too personal, where abouts do you live? We covered the length of the state on this trip - from St. Albans and Burlington to Brattleboro and Bennington, with stops in many of the little towns in between. It is our favorite place to go.
