Bagels and an Irish pub
 

Will be in town this weekend. Looking for recommendations on good bagels near our hotel (West 63rd between Broadway and Columbus).<BR><BR>Also, husband wants to re-live a past trip to Ireland and eat [and drink] at an Irish pub. Zagat’s is a bit short in its Irish cuisine choices. Can anyone make a suggestion?<BR><BR>Thanks, Patty<BR>

Just as long as you're not expecting to get bagels in an Irish pub. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Try Fannelis on Prince St in Soho,they use it in movies a lot, it being an old Irish pub and all, and I have seen Sean Penn there and Ed Burns..might be fun for your husband.

H&H Bagel at 2239 Broadway (Broadway & 80th Street)<BR><BR>

H&H has the best bagels in the neighborhood - probably in the city. <BR>But if you want something right near your hotel, try Bread Soul, on the east side of Broadway at 63rd St (small storefront near the magazine store). I have never gotten a bagel there but I thought of them because I like their baked goods, sandwiches & coffee. There are also two take-out "gourmet" places on the same side of Broadway, on 64th/65th St: Hadleigh's and Burke&Burke (more of a lunch place). <BR><BR>Balducci's has a branch on W. 66th St, west of Broadway - don't know if they have bagels, but they do have good coffee and good breads. <BR><BR>Have fun!

I'm not sure if it's still there, but there used to be a place called the Dublin House on West 79th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues....McCormack's on 3rd Avenue between 26th & 27th Streets serves lunch and dinner 7 days a week along with a full Irish breakfast and brunch on Saturday and Sunday until 4.

From an earlier post: Burke&Burke is now closed. And Balducci's will have bagels, but they don't "top" them for you (butter, cream cheese, etc). I also like Muffin Cafe on the west side of Columbus and 70th. And Dublin House is there, but I've never eaten there. Good luck!

Can't help on the bagels - Irish Bars, well, that's a different story.<BR><BR>Within walking distance of your hotel is Kennedy's. It's on 57th between 7th and 8th. (Maybe 8th and 9th) <BR><BR>A fairly authentic pub can be found at Thady Cons. It is on 2nd Ave. and 48th St. <BR><BR>For a bit of old time New York, go to McSorley's Old Ale House at 15th East 7th Street.Go in the afternoon when the regulars are there.

There are probably bagel purists out there, but to me there are 2 kinds of bagels -- BAGELS and FROZEN BAGELS. If they're not frozen they're usually good.<BR><BR>Ryan's Irish Pub suggestions are good ones. There are several Irish Pubs of varying quality along 2nd Avenue, between say 42nd Street and 57th and literally hundreds (if not thousands) of them all over the city. If you want to go a bit upscale, with good food, go over to Druid's on 10th Avenue b/w 50 & 51.<BR><BR>Irish Pubs to avoid -- Rosey O'Grady's (52nd & 7th) (a tourist trap), The Irish Pub (7th b/w 53&54)(average beer, no food), anything with the word "Blarney" in the title -- Blarney Stone, Blarney Rock, etc. These are big time barfly bars. Not much for atmosphere but on the upside, usually excellent prices, rudimentary food (beware) and a great jukebox.
