Baby shops in NYC?

I think this subject has appeared before, but I can't seem to find the thread. I am going to NYC in a couple of months and would like to find a gift for a good friend of mine who is having a baby girl this January. Does anyone know of a "posh" baby clothing shop in Manhattan? I plan to go to a few of the big department stores, but hope to avoid chain stores that I can most likely access online. Looking for something special (handmade, one of a kind, etc.) that I can't get here at home - Oklahoma. Thanks in advance!

The upscale French baby shop, Tartine et Chocolat, has a "branch" in Manhattan now. Go to google to find the address. I was in one in Paris, and the clothing is indeed lovely. It helps to know the sex of the baby-to-be, as you do, b/c little of the clothing is unisex. I bought my granddaughter (sex unknown at the time) a coming-home-from- the-hospital outfit, that was all white, but you'll have a wonderful (and difficult time making a choice) time since you'll be shopping for a little girl!

Barney's also has nice baby clothes that you won't find "everywhere". But my first choice for what you want would be Tartine et Chocolat!

Bonpoint(Madison Avenue in the 90s I believe) has exquiste Paris made fashions for little girls. Very feminine: smocking, hand embroidery, beautiful natural fabrics. It's a little girl's, and mother's, dream!

I was in Bonpoint in Paris, also, and didn't realize NYC had a shop, too. I agree with Grinisa about it being a lovely shop.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond. I will definitely check those out - it will be so nice to get something unique for the little one!

And just for tradition you should pick a toy up at FAO.

While you are on Madison, try Petit Bateau (1100 Madison Ave). Walk along this street and you'll find quite a few upscale baby clothing shops!

I also know that Burberry Baby has wonderful little clothes any New York City baby(or parents) would love! I believe the flagship store is on Park Ave.

I heartily endorse the places mentioned for upscale designer baby things. But for handmade, one of a kind things, you might consider ABC Carpet & Home on 19th st & Broadway. They carry some beautiful things & the store is one of a kind. Another place that has amazingly soft, hand knitted things is Brooklyn Handknit. They are located in Williamsburg Brooklyn but their merchandise is also carried at Bergdorf Goodman (good baby dept.), ABC Carpet & a few other places. Enjoy shopping!

Thanks for the recent responses! I have done internet searches on this, but several of your suggestions have never appeared anywhere. I appreciate it.
